Golfers Defeat Portland State Oregon golfers, led by Mike Davis’ two-under-par 69, easily defeated Portland State 16Vz - IOV2 at Tualatin Country Club in Tigard Friday. Davis defeated his opponent, George Jacobson, 2Vz-Vz in match play. Other Oregon irijtch play winners were Mike Currie (73) and Scott Smith (70), both 3-0, and Fred Ha ney (72), 21/2-1/2. Gay Davis (76) and Dave Leiken (77) were de feated. Mike Davis and Currie were the only best-ball team winners for the Ducks, winning 3 0. Gay Davis and Smith lost, 2-1, and Haney and Leiken gained a Wz IVz draw. Frosh Golfers Extend String Oregon’s undefeated Frosh golf team won its 10th and 11th straight matches last week - end, beating a pair of south ern hosts. A combined team from South western Oregon Community Col lege and Marshfield High fell al wind-swept Coos Country Club 19Va-17% on Friday, as Greg Miller paced the Frosh with a 76. - Vance Remick’s even-par 72 led the freshman to a 14Vfe-9% win over Roseburg Country Club Saturday. Adv. bjr Craig for Commissioner »S» Emerald Eugene Three Times in Seattle Netters Lose The Oregon tennis team had its nine-game winning streak broken in triplicate last weekend as three Seattle area teams—Seattle University, Washington and Seattle Tennis Club—got the best of the vis iting Duck netters. Most successful Webfoots were Chuck Deardorff, who won two of his three singles match JV Crew Team Dumped by OSU Oregon’s JV crew team travel ed to Corvallis Saturday for the second week, but unlike the week earlier, fell to Ore gon State. OSU covered the 2,000-meter Willamette River course in 5:54. as compared to the 6:02 record ed by the Ducks. But a- week before, on the same course, Ore gon had won in 5:44. "We had a severe steering problem this time,” coach Don McCarty said. Oregon’s freshman and light weight crews also lost, as OSU finished the freshman race in 5:53 to Oregon’s 6:32 and the lightweight competition in 6:44 to the Ducks’ 7:18. Oregon has a week break before traveling to Seattle on May 17 - 18 for the Western sprints. Seattle beat the Ducks Fri day by a 5-4 score, as the Chief tains won the top four singles matches. Oregon winners were Barry Sterett and Deardorff in singles, with Chuck Fritz and Deardorff taking one doubles victory and Dale Morse and Sterett another. Washington, the most impor tant match of the three, began in royal fashion, with Tilmanis, Oregon’s Australian net star, topping Knight in a two - hour long match, 8-6, 6-8, 11-9. But Deardorff was the only other Oregonian to win in singles, beating Paul Ehmer, 6-2, 6-0, and the Huskies edged Oregon, 5-4. In doubles competition, Til manis and Ron Zielinski defeat ed Bill Coats and Steve Finni gan, 7-5, 9-11, 7-5, and Morse teamed with Sterett against to topple Pete Fisher and Roland lass, 8-6, 6-3. Sunday, only Fritz tasted vic tory, as he beat STC’s Larry Monnger, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Doubles were not held due to wet courts, and the Ducks fell by a 5-1 count. Frosh Blank Foes The Oregon Frosh tennis team swept five singles and two doubles matches Saturday to defeat visiting South Salem High 7-0. Winners were Rick Wilson, Wayne . Baker, Dean Gadda, Don Gadda, Joe Barrett in sin gles, Wilson and Baker team ing for one doubles win, and the Gadda brothers taking the other. Duck Bowlers Post Two Wins Oregon’s varsity bowlers traveled to Pendleton Saturday for matches with Blue Mountain Community College and the Pendleton All-Stars. Against Blue Mountain, a five-game match, Oregon’s Thur ston Gilchrist rolled a 1001 ser ies with a high game of 264 to spark the win. Bob Goden, 988; Gene Cyrus, 936; Ron Rettke, 913; and Randy Wight, 909 completed the 4747 pin totals for the Ducks. Blue Mountain totaled 4697 pins. Against the All-Stars the same evening, Rettke led a four-game match win for Oregon with a 828 series and a 234 high game. Goden, Cyrus, Gilchrist and Wight followed in that order as the Duck team netted 3833 pins to 3760 for the Pendleton team.
