Inches Could Decide Oregon-WSU Contest By BEN KALB Of the Emerald A quarter of an inch, a single step, or a bad baton pass could make the difference of victory in tomorrow’s Oregon-Washing ton State spike dual at Hayward Field, By no fault of anyone, coach es Bill Bowerman and Jack Moo berry have come up with two of the most evenly matched squads in the conference. In fact, the teams are so closely paired that the local gamblers won’t even take odds. Pullman’s Cougars will bring to Duck Country a 1-1 record, walloping Stanford 106-39, but losing to Oregon State 84-61. The Ducks will be looking for their initial win, bowing the past two weeks to Washington 70-66 and USC 92 53. Oregon will put its 14 straight wins over WSU on the line, cur rently leading the rivalry 21 12. Lindgren vs. Kvalheim Probably the closest races of the meet will be the mile and the two mile. Former Olympian Gerry Lindgren will face Ore gon’s two-mile record holder Arne Kvalheim. Lindgren’s best time this year is 9:14.5 and Kvalheim’s is 8:37.9, but Lind gren has run it in 8:31.6. Lindgren, the Cougars senior superstar, will double in the mile and face the “Albany flash” Dave Wilborn. Wilborn ran an outstanding 3:58.4 last week, and “Little Gerry” toured the four laps in 4:07.8. Roscoe Divine, one of the top milers in Oregon’s history, still has a fatigue fracture and will not run for the rest of the sea son. Divine, by “redshirting,” still has two years of varsity eligibility left. Another race that should have the fans off their seats is the quarter-mile. Ron Couser, a transfer from LA Valley Col lege and last week’s winner over USC, will face WSU’s Larry Scheurer. Couser’s best time is 48.7 and Scheurer’s is 48.3. Close Sprints The sprints will be another battle that, will go down to the last stride. The locals’ Mike Deibele, sporting a best of 9.7 in the century and 21.4 in the 220, will meet the Cougars’ Jim Johnson (9.7, 21.2) and Dick Lapham (9.7, 21.5). Frank Mar latt and Larry Sweek could al so sneak in for the lemon and green. Jim Reverman, who pulled off his lifetime half mile best ...and what about vour future? LEARN TO FLY (It's fun!) In the hurdles, Olympian Gary Knoke and senior Bob Blum will face Boyd Gittens and Bob Daily of WSU. The hurdles are the only events where Bowerman’s thinclads hold a distinct advantage. On paper it would appear that if the Ducks want to keep their win streak alive they will have to come up with some points in the field events. Thrilling Long Jump The long jump will provide the best contest of the competi tion. Sophomore Tom Smith, who was edged last week by one-quarter inch by Trojan Earl “'The Pearl” McCullouch, has a best of 24.7. Washington State’s Barrie Johnson, one of the top in the AAWU last year, has a best this season of 24 7%. Another field event that could go either way is the high jump. Oregon’s Tom Endicott has cleared 6-6, but WSU has Keith Dalluge, who has also gone over the 6-6 height. Washington State figures to take the triple jump with John son (49-2:,4) and the shot with John Van Reenen (61-9l-2), and the javelin with Carl O’Don IM Schedule TKNNIS Friday Phi Gamma Delta vs. Wlllcox Saturday Sigma Alpha Epsilon vs. Theta Chi Boynton vs. Parsons COI.F Friday—Douglass vs. Sigma Nu Saturday—Kappa Sigma vs. Collier Campbell Club vs. Chi Psi t SPECIAL t STUDENT OFFER < For (his savings of $5.00 4 off on an Earl Schrib paint ' job yon must present your 4 student body card. 4 . Oregon’s Bob Var ley has the best pole vault mark of the competitors, hitting 15-6. Another tight duel could be the discus. Van Reenen has a 195-10 shot this season, but Ca nadian Zigurt Straut° has pull ed upsets before. Strauts has a 174-3 to his credit. The final victory may well come down to the mile relay, and that too is going to be close. Oregon will probably run Reverman, Van Dyke, Couser and Knoke, and the Cougars will combat with Art Sandison, A1 Karlberg, Gittens and Scheurer. Oregon’s best time is 3:13.7 and the Cougars have completed the four laps in 3:18.5. The prediction here is Ore gon by less than the amount of fingers you can count on one hand. However, if you’re think ing of placing a bet . . . our suggestion is to pick USC over Stanford. Field events began at 1:15, and running events get under way at 2 p.m. Oregon Leads Golf Meet Finals at WSU Coach Jack Adler's Oregon golf team, holding a 28-stroke lead at the midway point, travels to Clarkston, Wash., this week end for the final 36 holes of the Northern Division Golf Championships. Washington State, currently in last place among the four Northern Division teams, hosts the meet at Clarkston Country Club. The first 18 holes were played last Friday at the Cor vallis CC, and the second 18 at Eugene CC. Oregon has collected 913 strokes to Oregon State’s 941, Washington's 975 and WSU’s 979. Also travelling to Clarkston are senior Rich Knight, junior Scott Smith, and sophomores Mike Currie and Fred Haney. Adler says that he doesn't feel safe even with a 28-stroke lead, as the Clarkston Club has proved difficult for Duck golf ers this year. A month ago, Ore gon lost a sudden death decision to Whitman in the Banana Belt Tournament after leading the first day. Clai-kston is a small, tight pax 71. “The greens were very hard when were were up there last time,” said Adler, “and we had to hit short and run up, some thing we weren’t used to doing, and this hurt us.” Oregon Frosh golf team will travel to Bend Sunday to meet the Bend Men’s Club in a 10:30 a.m. encounter at the Bend Country Club. Apparently it has only one drawback: it is a very hard headline to work into ads for such staples as aspirin, Telly dinners, or Europe. Fortunately we are able to use it, since we have Rover dealers in all three of the cities. So if you are going to the Philippines, or to any one of 160-odd other countries, you can order a Rover or Land-Rover here and pick it up there, at considerable savings.
