'White Society Commits Suicide' ’Rap-1 ri Views—America's Dvina By LINDA MEIKRJURGEN Of (hr Km** raid A "rap-in" held in 190 Science, and sponsored by the Black Stu dent Union (BSU), followed the memorial service for Martin Luther King Jr.. Friday. The two hour "rap-in" gave a series of speakers a chance to analyze the tragedy Johnny Holloway, BSU president, voiced his opinion of the death of Dr King: "What you've got is dying, and it's going to destroy you unless you learn to live like people and not animals. You must civilize yourselves before anyone will live with you. Evcrylimc 1 look at a white face, I get sick It's all eloquent rhetoric, without sub stance." We will not mourn the death of Dr King -his ideology died with him—the beast that killed him killed it," Holloway said. Holloway said King wanted "not a jungle, but a place for man kind," and asked “where were you when he tried to help you?” He said Black people have been putting themselves on the line for their cause, and now they will seek "freedom by whatever means arc necessary." "A demented man shot Dr. King" he said, “the rest of the White men are demented, the rest of society is demented. You killed the only man to bring hope to the world. “You arc a dying race, you are a dying country.” "What are you mourning for? You didn’t help him when he needed you. That bad man who killed him was White, just like you. You can’t ever help yourselves, how are you going to help me?” “We aren’t asking for anything, you can’t give us anything, you can’t give yourself anything. “What are you going to do to save your country—what are you going to do?" “It’s about time,” Holloway said, “that we stop talking about law and order and start talking about law and justice.” “Who are you to tell me what cause I have hurt in rioting—you are hurting yours by being apathetic,” said Holloway “You arc so busy worrying about the world—yours is going to collapse here at home. “You are all racists, what arc you going to do about it?” Hollo way said. Bill Watson, a graduate in math and member of Students for a Democratic Society made two points: “Dr. King was the finest man ever to walk the undeserving ground of America,” and “Amer ica completely and totally killed Dr. King. We ask specifically ttiat the University either take immedi ate steps to tiring the Depart ment of Urban Planning in line with its stated aims, or that the University admit fail ure and liquidate the program," the resolution staled The resolution grew out of an "assessment of the planning department after 13 years as a graduate degree program. "Our ratio of students to fac ulty is 43-1. This is the worst ratio of any graduate or pro fessional program on this cam pus,” the resolution said. “We have 43 students enrolled cur rently, with an expected in crease next year to a total of near 60. Our budget of approx imately $23,000 only permits the hiring of one full-time faculty member. "The Department of Urban Planning under such a meager budget is obviously unaccred ited. Since the two-year urban planning graduate degree pro Lecturer Summarizes Baha'i's Influence Stove Myers, ASUO senator who is now in the process of resigning, gave a fireside talk last week on the "Impotence of I’olitics in the 20th Century.” The talk, to a Baha'i group of which Myers is a member, was a summary of the Baha'i reli gion and the effect it had upon Myers’ decision to resign. In reference to politics, My ers said "the more I got to he a part of it, the more I realized it was not an answer." Myers, a former member of the defunct Student Action Coa lition, believe political leaders should not use their power to force others to their side. Myers went on to say there are two basic movements in the world—the establishment and the non-establishment These two groups, Myers feels, cancels each other because they are always lighting. This is why, Myers said, he joined the Baha’is. "If you see a group of peo ple that don't look as if they belong together then they are Baha'i, Alyers said. There is, he Teels, a feeling of unity bridging gaps such as those between generations, rac es and political factions In the Baha'i religion, Myers said, there is a saying that the earth is one country and man kind is its citizens. Myers went on to say that "each culture has a lot to con tribute to the international community” and, thus, no party or group is inferior. Baha’i is an independent world religion which was found ed in Persia (now Iran) by Bah’ulla’h. Because of their belief that world is just one community, the Baha'is teach it is possible and necessary to have a world wide community with such concepts as a universal lan guage and education. All this is to come about, they believe, without suppress ing any one person, idea or group. "Educational resources are simply not made available to an unaccredited and insufficiently budgeted department. Library books are too small in number and outdated. Work space is limited and crowded. Grants, re search funds, and scholarships are rarely offered to our de partment,” the resolutions con cluded. The students suggested that the department be run on a 10-1 student-faculty ratio, in creased studio space, library books, scholarships and research funds. "If action is not forthcom ing, the Student Planning Asso ciation is prepared to take fur ther direct action as apprpriate in order to underscore the grav ity of our current situation,” the group said.
