Dorm Counselor? Heaven Forbid! By C AROL LOWERY (or the Emerald “lley. Look at that girl over there. She’s not bad. I think I might ask her—she’s WHAT? You’re kidding! They don’t look like that! Look, she even has a smile on her face. . . .’’ Now could somebody please tell me how he knew I was a dorm counselor? I wasn't born with a master key in my hand, you know. . . . The dorm counseling syn drome is not hereditary. The victim is shaped by his envir onment: a freshman girl’s dorm will make you lock and unlock front doors at odd hours; a freshman boy's dorm will fa miliarize you with damage bills from the business office and how to know when to knock on doors of noisy rooms; an upperclass dorm gives you the opportunity to put up announcements and open luggage rooms. But from there on it’s your own show. ASUO Senator Vies for Post Dick Kymann, ASUO senator, announced his candidacy Tues day for the Oregon Fourth Dis trict position as delegate to the 1968 National Democratic Con vention to be held in Chicago this summer. Eymann, 22, is a University senior majoring in political science. He is chairman of the newly formed University Party, chairman of the University Stu dents to re elect Wayne Morse Committee, and is state co • chairman of Students for Morse. He has worked as an aide to Senator Morse in his Washing ton, D.C. office and has served as a security officer in the Uni ted States Senate. Eymann was recently elected a delegate from Lane County to the State Democratic Conven tion and has been chosen by the Oregon Young Democrats to represent the state at the National Democratic Campaign Convention to be held in Wash ington, D.C. later this month. I have “counseled” 260 girls in four dorm complexes under four different head residents with five co-counselors in the past five terms, and perhaps some of my observations may help those of you who arc con sidering settling down in a dor mitory next year with a nice private room, all expenses paid, to assist and lead to salvation all the student body numbers who reside therein. On red tape: You keep track of who moves into and out of your dorm, in triplicate; you collect guest money, sec to it that everyone gets their library book notices, fill out a report each week on what you think happened to your hall, keep them posted on when the health center will not be able to re move warts. On dorm activities: You are there. You enjoy it, especially if you didn’t have to do any of the planning. Happiness is offering an idea or a bit of en couragement and then watching your officers make it their own successful project. Happiness is not having to be the clean - up committee. On discipline: Some people need it. Nobody wants it. You give it. On counseling; "What does TLN stand for in this time schedule?” “OK, now. It’s four turns to the left, back one turn to 27 and then what?” "My roommate does cart - wheels in her sleep. . . . How can I get her to stop before she breaks my rubber tree in half?” More on counseling (but less frequent): Arc you a friend or an impartial observer who is employed by the University to see to it that they love, love, love it here? And more impor tant, which does the girl in your dorm need to talk to most? Maybe a student is fed up with school—which happens frequent ly. Who can say what’s the best thing for her to do better than herself. But she’s come to you. (1) you are available, (2) may This Spring Vacation ^ DISCOVER MT. Only a routine room inspection can offer so much in so little space. You suggest that they take the scotch tape off the woodwork, and then leave in a state of shock. That dorm in June is going to be a lot different than that same dorm the previous Septem ber. It will be better or worse, whether or not you are there. You’ll change, too. Each coun selor is different. Each dorm student is different. If you like living with people, if you even like people a little bit—you won’t regret carrying a master key for awhile. That key can open ail the rooms in your unit. But once you’re in the room— that’s when you find out what kind of a counselor you are. Interested students may ap ply through the housing office in Carson Hall until April Sth. There will be scheduled infor mation meetings for those who wish to counsel during the first week of spring term. WHY PAY MORE?
