KIN A It HII.LK, a visiting professor of mathematics at the University, has been named the recipient of the John Ericsson Medal for his outstanding con tribution to the field of mathe matics. The medal is awarded every second year and alternately to a Swedish citizen and an Amer ican citizen of Swedish descent as a recognition of achievement in the technical and scientific fields. Courts of Appeals have issued conflicting decisions on it. In the O’Brien case, the U.S. Court of Appcals for the First Circuit said the law singles out "persons engag ing in protests for special treat ment,” and that such legislation “strikes at the very core of what the First Amendment pro tects." However, in a case in voicing David Miller, who burn ed his draft card at a New York City street rally, the Court of Appeals for the Sec ond Circuit affirmed Miller’s conviction and denied that draft card burning is symbolic speech protected by the First Amend ment. The Supreme Court re fused to review the Miller case. O'Brien, who is now a stu dent at Boston University, said he would not attempt to pre dict how the Supreme Court will decide the case.
