DENNIS HARTMAN Undefeated Oregon Diver to Perform Spotlight Set On Swimming By DAN HAUSLER Of the Emerald Swimming steals the sports spotlight this weekend as the Duck wetbacks fight to make their first homecoming a suc cessful one. Friday night at 7:30, the San Jose Spartans invade Leighton Pool, and Saturday at 2:00 another chapter unfolds in one of the west coast's most spirited swimming rivalries. Oregon vs. University of Washington. Last season the Huskies edged the Webfoots by a single point. Saturday's meet shapes up to be just as tight, with the two squads evenly balanced in most departments. Duck coach Don Van Rossen cited two contests which Oregon must do well to insure victory — the 1000-yard freestyle and 50-yard freestyle. The Huskies have outstanding performers in both events. Friday's San Jose meet could be just as challenging. The San Jose squad is a good young team, and last year finished fourth in national small college competition. The Spartans and Ducks have battled to two ties in their past three meetings, with the Ducks winning one. Considering this type of com petition. Van Rossen stated that this meet, as well as the Washington encounter, could be decided by a “flip of a coin.” An added attraction for sports fans is the entertainment activities of the swim team's first homecoming, an event which promises to become a tradition in the University of Vital Food Shop 1079 Oak Street Vitamins — Health Foods Mus-L-On Macrobiotic Food Herb Tea Books 11th & Oak Oregon water sports program. Friday's pre-meet entertain ment begins at 7:00 with a trampoline exhibition by Ore gon’s undefeated diver, Dennis Hartman. Hartman was an All American diver in high school, and a membei of his school’s gymnastics team, specializing on the tramp. Immediately proceeding the 7:30 Oregon-San Jose meet, fans will see diving displays by An drea Friedl and Dave Ciochetti. Miss Friedl is queen of the Dolphin Court, and the former Montana AAU high school Oregon’s undefeated Frosh swim team battles the unbeaten University of Washington Pups in a preliminary meet Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in Leighton Pool. champion. She will be the first woman to represent Oregon in the upcoming Northwest Inter collegiate Woman’s swimming and diving championships. Cio chetti, an outstanding freshman prospect, was a high school All American diver last season. After the meet, Oregon's synchronized woman’s swim team, the Amphibians, will per form. Saturday activities begin at 1:30 p.m., prior to the Wash ington meet. Entertainment will be provided by Rory Rubenu witz and his Five Bagels, a German Band. A presentation of the Dolphin Queen and her court, the Dolphinettes, will fol low. According to the Oregon coach, we'll need at least five more points than we scored against San Jose. The Spartans handed the lemon-and-yellow their only loss of the season last week, defeating the locals by 161-159. Eastern Washington will be paced by all-around star itandy Caruthers. Caruthers placed first on the long horse in last year's NAIA National Championships, and also added a second on the parallel bars in the nationals. He was instrumental in leading his school to a six-point home gym victory over the Ducks last season. Ducks at Home This season the meet will be on the Ducks’ hunting grounds, and Caruthers will face stiller and more experienced competi tion. Sophomore Dave Olson is the only question mark. He injured his foot in practice, but should be ready by Saturday. Olson is undefeated this year on the long horse, and is looking for ward to facing Caruthers in what should be a very exciting event. Ken Betterton on the side horse and Brad Hunter on the p-bars also will be looking for ward to their dual with the Washington super star. Oregon’s lineup will be the same as last week’s. Dennis Hartman could be ready to go on the trampoline. Hartman has been sidelined, and according to Smith, “If he is ready to go, it may mean an extra few points for us.” Trampolists Improve Coach Smith commented that the trampoline team has im proved the most this season, and should help in meet scor ing. Junior Wayne Noecker will go all-around for the Ducks. Noecker contributed 44 points in a losing cause last week. Three sophomores, Jim Lam bert, Jim Pittman and Dave Manock, will lead the Ducks on the still rings, and Captain Dave Telling will pace the team in floor exercise. Seniors Mike Olson and Jim Hampton also will figure high in many events for Oregon. Noecker and Bob Leach will go on the high bar against Caruth ers. First event starts at 8:15. Wrestlers Meet Three Top Foes By STAN HORTON of thr KmeruM Duck wrestling fans can look forward to plenty of action this weekend as three top coast teams invade McArthur Court for Friday night and Saturday afternoon action. Cal I’oly of San Luis Obispo takes on University of Wash ington ut 5:30 Friday and the Oregon Ducks at 8 p.m. the same night. Oregon tangles with UW' at 12:30 Saturday and follows with San Jose State at 2:30. The Huskies and Spartans conclude the action when they collide at 4:30. Art Keith, Oregon head wres tling coach, terms Cal Poly "one of the strongest squads in California." The Mustangs were NCAA college division champi ons in I960 and have been un defeated in competition this season. California. UCLA and Stanford have been among their victims. Bruce Schuts, 1967 AAWU titlist at 137 pounds, al so adds strength to the once defeated team. Last year Oregon and Wash ington battled to a 16-16 tie, but in 1966 the Ducks came away with a 41-0 triumph. San Jose Mate seems to no the virtual unknown of the four squids. Lornc Miller, one of several 192 pound stars in the weekend gathering, has been noted us one of the top grip piers on the Spartan team. Oregon, with a 99 season mark, will ntuke no surprise chump's in its lineup and will go with most of the same men that dropped a tough 2tt 13 de cision to Oregon State last Sat urday. Undefeated John Miller and one-beaten Brent Merrill and Henry Muller head the list of Duck wrestlers who will partici pate Pete Helxer, 145, a n d Kandy Kranke, 192, have both been sick this week but are probable starters against Cal Poly.
