The Ducks will dangle their 4-1 season record in front of the noses of Brigham Young and Utah, the Big Eight Con ferencc’s two top swim teams. Friday, the Ducks battle the Cougars and the University of Denver in a three-way match. BYU will be the big challenge Favored to win the Big Eight swimming title this season, they are the defending conference champs and a good young team. Swimming for BYU this sea son is the national freshman record-holder in the 200-yard butterfly, Fred Baird, who last season clocked a phenomenal 1:54.3. Little is known of the Denver squad. According to Coach Don Van Kossen, they will give Ore gon’s ace diver Dennis Hartman his first real challenge. Coach ing Hartman's opposition is, ironically, his father. Saturday won’t be any easier. In Utah, they face a team pre dicted to finish number two in their conference, (right behind BYU) a team which the Ducks have never beaten in a dual meet, a team which finished fourteen points ahead of them in last year’s NCAA meet, and a team which edged them 5t> 48 last year in Eugene. The Utes have a number of outstanding swimmers, among them former Hig Sky butterfly king, John Shackeford. This season, Utah has already better ed all their victory times from last year's UO-Utah meet. Oregon tankers will be well primed for their weekend tests Coaches Van Rossen and Don McGavern have worked their men hard all week with empha sis on fundamentals. Van Rossen explained this in reference to last week's Califor nia meets. “We found out they were still out of shape. They need more endurance, so we're training harder. We're going back a few weeks in drills." Water Polo Practice The water polo team will hold practices 6 - 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Free instruc tions in the basics of the sport will be given. Anyone intending to compete for the team spring term should participate. Coach Dick Smith professed his team's hopes by saying, "We've never been more psy chologically ready. We are look ing stronger than ever, but we know it will be a tough meet." Last year the Oregon ironmen were on the narrow entFuf a 156 150 decision, but this season, according to Smith, the margin may be within two points either way. San Jose State is paced by all around athlete Tony Cappola. who will be featured in five events, has consistently scored over 50 points by himself every meet. Super ( appola The Spartan super star has registered a 9.05 best on the long horse, an 8 4 in floor exer cise, and a 9 2 on the still rings. Jim Turpin and Joe Sweeny are among other Spartans who figure in the scoring picture Oregon will go with t h c same lineup that defeated Wash ington State two weeks ago. Smith said that the only ex ception will be the addition of Eugene sophomore Bob Leach. The Duck mentor commented, "Leach has been working hard and now has good moves.” The only other question mark is senior veteran Mike Olson, who has been sidelined with a cold However, the 21-year-old two-year lcttcrman should be ready to go by Friday. Captain Dave Telling will lead the floor exercise squad, and will meet stiff competition from Cappola. Top side horse man is Ken Betterton, who put on a good performance in the win against the Cougars. Sophs on Kings Three sophomores, Jim Lam bert, Jim Pittman and Dave Manock, will be the men to watch on the rings, and Mike Olson will be number one man on the trampoline, where the Webfoots were weakened by the graduation of John Turchi. Dave Olson and Mike Olson will lead the long horse con tingent, while senior Jim Hamp ton and sophomore Brad Hunt er figure high on the parallel bars. Leach and all around man Wayne Noecker will face Cap pola and Sweeny on the horizon tal bar, and that figures to be quite a duel.
