- sunshine and sorrow A Bowlful Of Bumpkins By D. L. SONNICHSEN For ihf Emerald ‘‘Good afternoon, football fans. This is Bill Bombast here in Miami. Florida, ready to bring you all the pre-game pageantry of the second annual Fantasy Bowl. “As you middle class Americans surely know, this bowl of all bowls, this clash of all clashes, matches the champion of the Na tional Security Football League with the top team in the American Heritage Football League. The betting here during the week has demonstrated that sports reactionaries throughout this great land of ours are having difficulty telling these two leagues apart, and in reality, there is little to choose between. “The two teams are rated even, and apparently we’ll have the same kind of exciting battle—with everyone in the dark as to the outcome—that made last year’s Fantasy Bowl suppress all its TV prime time opposition. “Both coaches have scoffed at speculation that they will try new ploys on their opponents in today's cleat collision, but with the credibility gap what it is these days, don’t be startled if you see a whole host of new right-wing alignments on the field before we're through. “les. it is indeed a thrill for me to be bringing you all this colorful action. The dominant hues for today's game are of course red. white and blue, and it gives my patriotic heart a new burst of vitality when I gaze from the red lights on the scoreboard, to the all-white stands (where a large portion of these 77,000 fans are presently masticating on Saran-wrapped hot dogs). “Finally, my eyes ascend to the brilliant blue sky above . . . and look! A squadron of napalm-bearing U.S. fighter-bombers is now streaking over the stadium in a salute to the American tax payer. Isn't it comforting to know these fearless fighting forces are making Southeast Asia safe for Democracy? “Now the festivities will REALLY get into full swing, fans, be cause marching onto the field (Falange style) are the sponsors of the Fantasy Bowl—The Youthful Americans for Fantasy, led bv their benefactor Gandy Rragg. Oh. those drill formations are really magnificent, viewers! Just look at 'em do the Green Goose Step! “At the 50-yard line a group of the YAFers are about to present their yearly Overkill Awards to nine of our finest Vietnam artillery marksmen. This dramatic ceremony was originally scheduled for halftime, but the brave gunmen requested the change so that they could return to War Zone D as soon as possible I ask you fans, could anything be more All-American? “Circling the field now is the motorcade carrying this year's Fantasy Bowl Grand Marshall. Governor Ronald Rav-Gun. Wow! . . . guessing Conservatively. I d have to say there are at least 68 cars in the parade. “As the motorcade moves clockwise around the stadium (so that the cars will make only Right turns), I can see a fan run ning alongside the lead vehicle while the Governor autographs his program. Now the ex actor has tossed the program back to its owner. Careful Governor, you can be fined for throwing gar bage out of a car! “Here it is. We've nearly reached the moment of ultimate majesty and communication. The motorcade has halted and Governor Ray Gun is now approaching the other dignitaries assembled at mid field. to lead everyone in the singing of My Country 'Tis of Thee. SONNICHSEN For (hr Kmrrald Oregon State's maneating in firmary may have unintention ally given Coach Steve Belko's Oregon basketball team "a shot in the arm,” with Saturday's game between the two rivals fast approaching. Newcomers to the OSU cam pus receive a traditional warn ing from veteran students: “No mattuh how sick yuh be, stay away from ouah infuhmuhree,” drawl those few Beavers who have seen the interior of their medical center and lived to tell about it. But Wednesday — apparently without thinking about the con sequences of his actions—Ore gon State Coach Paul Valenti ordered a pair of his ailing stars into the old brick building in a corner of the Corvallis cam pus. The question now becomes . . . will Loy Petersen and Vic Bartolome make the trip to Eu gene this weekend? Stall Possible As Ducklings Battle Rooks By JOHN ANDERSON Of the Emerald ‘'I think, volunteered 6-9 cen ter Stan Love, “they’re gonna stall." “They're probably going to keep the ball as long as they can so we can't shoot as much." Love and his teammates, the undefeated Frosh basketball team, go into Saturday eve ning's battle with traditional rival Oregon State with a single thought in mind: Keep the rec ord perfect. “The Rooks are big and strong and tough.” said coach Steve Heiner “They’ve got some good players up there. They should give us a real good game.” Love’s comment was based on the fact that the Ducklings use the fast break a great deal, while the Rooks, like their var sity, are mainly a ball control team. The Rooks last Monday night beat the Washington Pups 57-47, two evenings after the Frosh had topped Washington by a 91-76 score. OSU is led by Tim Perkins and Jeff Haller. 6-5 and 6-6 for wards, respectively. The Frosh roster was bolster ed this week by the return to action of 6-5 Australian Rodney Wulff, who had been gone since the second week of December with a bad knee.
