Foundation Grants Open to Students Undergraduate students will conduct research In biology over the summer term under the im petus of a $20,200 grant award ed by the National Science Foundation to the University. According to (ieorge C'arroll, assistant professor of biology and project director, the undergrad uate participant research grant will provide 20 stipends of $60 per week which will be award ed to promising undergraduates indicating an interest in re search. The grant will also pro vide materials and equipment. The recipients of the stipends will hi- chosen from throughout the country, although primar ily from states west of the Mis sissippi, Carroll said. Up to eight stipends may be awarded to University students and special preference will be given to small schools in the l’acific Northwest and Croat liasin areas. Students will be spending from nine to 11 weeks conduct ing research projects, for which they will earn up to eight hours of credit. College seniors will not be considered for the awards ex cept under special circumstanc es since the primary interest of the program is to attract under Slow Library Expansion Seen The University library is slow ly but emphatically spreading out. Its records reception center has been opened in the basement of McClain Hall. The center will be operated in conjunction with the University’s accelerat ed records management pro gram, and will be opened only by pre-arrangement with the Archivist. Also this term, the science di vision of the library has moved to more spacious quarters. Its new location is in the center of the science complex, below ground Moor level with an en trance in the new glass-walled lobby beneath the building. The deadline for applications is March 15. and recipients will he notified by April 15, Plan Early—Now For Your Funds Starting January 15 requests for fund-raising events will have to be made at least two weeks prior to the proposed event, according to Tom Nash, chairman of the Erb Memorial Union Board. However, exceptions may be granted only after a written ap peal has been submitted to the board chairman or the Univer sity scheduling ofllcer.
