Against UCLA Depth Duck Chances Dull By RICK FITCH Emerald Sports Writer "If they drop the baton in both relays, we’ll only lose by eight i points," That’s how much chance track coach Bill Bowerman feels his row Ducks have of upsetting the UCLA track powerhouse tornor | row in Los Angeles. "There's always a chance." re-' marked Bowerman. “Let’s just say it isn't in the realm of pos sibility." He "realistically" expects the Ducks to get 55 points against the loaded Bruin team which has gone over the century mark four times enroute to a 5-0 record. The Bruins beat Oregon 91-54 last year, and this season they are rated as much improved. Their remarkable depth is illus trated by the fact that they have men in the top five in every AAWU event but the javelin, long jump and two mile. Oregon’s strength will be in the middle and long distances, the shotput and discus with Neil Steinhauer. The javelin and high hurdles events seem marginal. No Doubles Bowerman indicated that he will not double any of his dis tance stars against UCLA. "I don’t anticipate doubling any body,” stated Bowerman. “I very definitely do not plan on dou bling Divine. That’s getting kind of old.” Divine, who has run both the j mile and 880 in each of the last two meets with highly success-1 ful results, will run only in the mile. A sub-four minute miler last year, Divine has run 4:03.3 this season. Dave Wilborn, 4:07.9. and Norm Trerise, running in his first dual meet mile, will round out Oregon’s mile entry. Bowerman will go with Wade Bell. Mike Crunican and possibly Jere VanDyk in the 880. Bell has the second fastest time in the na tion in the half-mile at 1:48.2, and Crunican had his season best, a 1:51.5, last week against Cal' “He’s going to run an 880 sometime, if not this week, then certainly next week," Bowerman said of VanDyk who ran a 1:53.0 early in the season last year. Two Mile Sweep Possibly eyeing a sweep. Bow erman had Arnie Kvalheim. John Woodward, and Damien Koch in the two-mile. Kvalheim ran the third fastest three-mile in the na tion last week at 13:53.9. It is virtually conceded that Steinhauer and Bob Foskett, one two in the PAC. will finish in that order against UCLA. Stein hauer should also take first in the discus. Bob Blum and the Bruin’s Ron Copeland provide the prospect for a great individual battle in the 120 highs. Last year Blum lost to Copeland, the defending NCAA champ, while running a 13.8. “Copeland is very hard to beat,” commented Bowerman, “but Blum will be out to beat him if he can." Bowerman sees little chance for an Oregon victory in either Duck Nine Meets Cougars, Huskies m Oregon’s baseball team resumes conference action this weekend when they host Washington State’s nationally ranked Cougars Friday at 3 p.m. and Washington’s Huskies in a 1 p.m. Saturday twin bill. The Ducks, after splitting with [ California last weekend, are 6-10 on the year and 1-1 in conference action while the Cougars are 1-3 and the Huskies are 0-4 after both met USC and UCLA in doubleheaders last weekend. The Ducks will likely go with sophomore standout Jon Wheler (2-1) in Friday’s contest and with Joe Kniser (0-1) and Jerry Gjes vold (1-1) on Saturday, accord ing to associate baseball coach Jack Roche. Wheeler has been the work horse of the Duck staff with 26 2/3 innings pitched and a 1.35 earned run average. In his lone conference game last Friday, Wheeler went the distance and shutout the Bears 2-0 with a clutch ninth inning performance in which he struck out the clean up hitter with the bases loaded. Cougars Powerful Neither Kniser nor Gjesvold has seen extended action. Kniser has pitched 11 innings with a 5.76 ERA and Gjesvold has gone 13 innings with a 3.51 ERA. The Cougars, last year’s cham pions of the now disbanded North ern Division, were ranked sixth in the nation before last week end’s contests. “They’ve got a good hitting club,” Roche said. “They’ve had trouble pitching - wise but they played a couple of pretty good ball clubs down there.” The Cougars lost two to PAC leader UCLA and then split with top ranked USC with a 1-0 win in 11 innings. After last week’s conference opening games the Cougars are third in PAC team batting with a .241 average, 32 hits, including two homers and 46 total bases. Pelander Leading Hitter Jim Pelander was the Cougars’ leading hitter in last week’s games with two hits in six at bats, in cluding one triple and one run batted in. The Huskies on the other hand, have had little success with the bat. Against USC and UCLA the Huskies collected only 22 hits for four runs and a .186 average. Two Washington regulars are, however, over the .300 mark on the season. Tom White, junior first baseman, leads the Huskies with a .305 average with 18 hits in 59 trips to the plate. Sopho more shortstop Terry Thompson is hitting .300 on 12 hits in 40 at bats. Pitching-wise the Huskies have two strong starters in Bob Olyer, 1.37 ERA, and Ray Ewing, 2.38 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings. Oyler, Ewing Likely Starters Lefthanders Oyler and Ewing or righthander Dave Bell will probably start against Oregon. Hitting hasn’t been the Ducks’ strong point either, but senior A 11 - American Ron Delplanche and sophomore third baseman Larry Hanson have been provid ing productive bats. Delplancne is currently hitting .345 and has driven in 10 runs. Hanson was hot at the plate last week, going 5-10 with two doubles and one home run, and against Cal he went 4-7 to put him in second place in PAC hitting. IM Swim Meet May 10,17 The intramural swimming meet at Leighton Pool has been set for May 10 and May 17, according to a release by the School of Health, Physical Education and Recrea tion. Diving prelims will be at 4 p.m. May 10, followed by the swimming prelims at 7 p.m. and all finals will be at 7 p.m. May 17. A team may enter four men in each individual event and one team in each of the relays. Each team will be eligible for entrance points if the team has four or more members who completed the events they entered. Competition will be held in the 1-meter diving, the 50, 100, and 200-yard freestyles; the 100 yard butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke; the 100-yard indivi dual medley, and the 200-yard freestyle and individual medley relays. relay. "We can beat them if either of two things happen." he said. "We might win if they drop the baton or if we can fig ure out some way to tie their legs together." Oregon’s chances in the sprints and the 440 relay will he hurt by Leon Lincoln’s absence. Lincoln, with an all-time best of 9.0 in the hundred, will not make the trip due to an injury. That leaves Deibele, Bob Bau er. and Rick Howard to fend off UCLA’s terrible trio of Harold Busby. Norm Jackson, and Tom Jones. All three are 9.7 or under in the hundred, and have run the 220 in 21.2. The Bruins have a chance at the sweeps in both the high jump and triple jump. They have three high jumpers at 6-6 or high er. while Oregon’s best is San guras at 6-4. Two UCLA vaulters have gone over 16 feet and that leaves Bob Varley. 15-6 last week, with the prospect of finishing third. I'holu by Steve Wlllrll HOB VARLEY 15-6 Vauller Faces Third Place Prospect Three Ducks Atop PAC Statistics Three Oregon Ducks head con ference statistical categories ac cording to the recent AAWU sta tistics. Neal Steinhauer heads the trio with his 68-11 Mi effort in the shot put. which is the second best put in the world. Steinhauer is also second in the discus with a heave of 187-3. Wade Bell tops the conference in the 880 with a time of 1:48.2, the second best in the nation this year. In baseball, Oregon sophomore hurler Jon Wheeler is one of seven pitchers with 0.00 earned run average in PAC competition Other Ducks are near the top in the statistics. Oregon third baseman Larry Hanson is second in conference hitting with a .577 average. Oregon miler-half miler Roscoe Divine is third in the mile with a 4:03.3 time and third in the 880 with a 149 5 clocking Bob Foskett gives the Bucks the two best shot putters in the conference with a second place in the shot at 59-10 In the javelin Bill Heikkila is third with a throw of 239 2 V In the two mile Norm Treri.se is tied for fourth with California's Bob 1’rice at 9:01.2 USC and llt'UA, the nation's two top track teams, dominate nearly every track category while the Bruins lead in every base ball category except team field ing where Cal is on top. The Trojans have a leader in nine of 17 track events and Ore gon State leads in three. The Bruins , have only one leader, Gerald Lee in the triple jump, but hold down 20 spots in the stats which list the top five in each event.
