Committee . . . <C ontinued from page 1) reporting back to the faculty at its May meeting include: • How will the P-N-P be con nected with a letter grade, if at all? Will the standards for a pass bo higher than a "0”? • Should there be a limit to the number of ungraded courses taken during freshman and sopho more years so the students' op tions might he used up before they can provide the greatest benefit? Or would they be equally valuable in protecting the fresh men and sophomores against the harsh grades that might tend to flunk him out? • Will this proposal he fol lowed oy a request that the num ber of graded hours be reduced from 160? And will students come to the ARC asking to have their individual requirement of graded courses lowered for graduation (say a student with 147 graded and 300 ungraded hours, as sug gesled by one member.) Bollinger replied that "any time you set up rules you're go ing to have someone ask for ex ceptions In this case 1 would tell the student ‘that’s unfortu nate.’ ” And Dave McCloskcy agreed it should Ire the student's re sponsibility to use discretion in taking the ungraded courses and not take too many too soon. • Should the instructor know if the student is a “P-N-P”? On this issue. Bollinger and McClos key, agreed to the affirmative, suggesting he might even ask at the beginning of the term who is taking it lor a "P." McCloskey pointed out that the class should he conducted just the same and the student should be required to do all the same work as students who are getting a grade. Another question: • How long should the student have to change from graded to non-graded if he changes his mind? The consensus was that it should be the same as that for either dropping or adding classes. • Could a student take more than 36 hours for pass no pass'' “Yea," was the consensus, "but not for credit.” Only 36 of his ungraded hours would count to ward graduation, though he could take as many ungraded courses as he wants. 0 Would the option apply to graduate students? “Not this one,” was the answer. • Could an instructor choose to teach his course as strictly non-graded? "No,” was the an swer. The University requires that an instructor give grades in his classes Even by accepting the F-N-P proposal, he would be giv ing a letter grade as well as the “Pass' or "no-pass.” The letter grade would be kept on tile. In other discussion, Cerald Bo gen, associate director of admis sions. asked Bollinger: "If a pro fessor has a point of view that grading is bis best technique for teaciiing, then would you sub j stitute the student's judgment : for the instructor's as the best means of learning?" MeCloskey’s reply was^ihat “there must be a balance between the way the teacher can best teach his class and the way the student cap best learn ” Clifford Constance, Registrar, said grades may be desired by freshmen and sophomores "be cause they want to see how they are doing in college.” But then he suggested that they may be able to get an idea of their per formance just by their grades on quizzes and examinations.
