Bruins Drop Oregon 9 9 • (Continual from four I) players you’ll find around here that could even make the UCLA team.” The game started with the fairy tale like twist with which the Ducks were wishing it could end Helko sent Mike Nicksic, his fill guard complement to Jones, in to jump against Alcindar. Aleindor, with Nicksic doing little more thun watching, pro ceeded to bat the hall in the di rection of a teammate, only to have Duck forward Bill Thomas jump in front at the last second and intercept. For the next 1:45, Orcgan pro ceeded—with the exception of a single shot by Kenny Smith—to pass the ball around, either look ing for openings (Belko's expla nation), or stalling (Wooden’s). Then Warren reached in, stole the hall from Nicksic, raced down the court, dropped it in, and gave the Bruins the lead they were never going to lose. Less than 18 seconds later, War ren did it again, and it was 4-0. Aleindor scored the next held goal about 30 seconds later, and by the time Oregon had its first point—off a free throw by Kenny Smith with nearly four minutes gone--UCLA was already in front by eight. Still, Oregon for the next few minutes rallied gamely to make a contest of It. Smith and Jones, according to llelko, began "watching their shots,” and in the process hit everything in sight. By the time seven minutes had elapsed, the duo had each added two more field goals to the Ore gon collection, and—with help from a 20-footer by Pinkstaff— moved the score to 14-11. The game remained close dur ing the next 30 seconds. Shakel ford (a tip-in) and Smith (a long baseliner) exchanging baskets Then the Bruins began to move ahead for good. Shakelford hit a 10-foot jump or, a free throw, and Warren a 23-foot Jumper to give the Uclans a 23 13 bulge. With exactly half the first half gone, Thomas ended the Bruin spree with a free throw. Back UCLA came. A 94 scor ing advantage in the next four minutes gave them a 32-18 lead. By the time the half ended, Allen had scored 16 points, War ren It, Alcindor 8, and the Bruins 49. Oregon, despite 10 points each from Smith and Jones, had 32. Shooting percentages at that point were impressive in a game with that much scoring. UCLA was .953 from the field, and Ore gon .345. In the first two and one half minutes of the second half, the Ducks made another bid for glory. PinkstafT, with two field goals, Smith, Jones, and Bob Craven nil had a hand in bringing the visit ors back to within 13, 5340. "We were doing all right until this point," Belko said after the game. “Then we started shooting too much. We got too eager.” Alcindor also got hot. The Bruin took a rim shot by licitz and dropped it in, and scor ed a point-a-minute for the first 10 minutes of the second half, before being taken out with about six minutes remaining. The Ducks continued to shoot well in the second half, finishing the game with a .542 from the field The Bruins, however, shot .000 off more attempts and con tinued to increase its lead. The only bit of suspense of fered in the final quarter of ac tion was whether or not UCLA would score 100. A jumper by Dick Lynn with 24 seconds remaining answered that question. And the UCLA cheering section went wild for the final time. Neither Wooden nor anyone else around, however, felt Ore gon had disgraced itself. “They are a good shooting team,” the UCLA coach offered in final tribute. “Much better than we had expected.” Bronowski Named Condoa Lecturer .lacon lironowski, a senior tel low of the Salk Institute for Bio logical Studies in San Diego, will be the 1967 Condon Lecturer in Oregon. As Condon Lecturer, Bronowski will be giving a series of lectures at the University, Oregon State, and Portland State College. A mathematician by training, Bronowski is also known for his work in intellectual history and literature, and more recently, in the philosophy of science.
