Plagiarism Conviction Likely to Result in Suspensior By JA()I THOMPSON Kmrralit Stuff Writer A student convicted of plag iarism in Student Court will probably receive one of the most severe sanctions which can be imposed under the Code of Stu dent Conduct. The sanction will be either ex pulsion or suspension from the University. In a court session Tuesday, members of the court and other officials connected with the court emphasized the importance of students being aware of the seriousness of the punishment they can receive for plagiarism. Current student understanding, the court feels, seems to be that disciplinary probation, a much lighter sanction, is the common penalty for plagiarism. Based on Past Sanctions This understanding may stem from the fact that in the past two years the sanction for plagiarism has been disciplinary probation, with only one exception. At the beginning of this year, however, the court adopted a pol icy which states in part that the 1 saunction for plagiarism will “normally be expulsion or sus pension unless there are mitigat ing circumstances.'’ The court upheld this policy in a lengthy hearing Tuesday by unanimously supporting its ear lier decision to suspend a stu dent for the coming winter term. Appealed to Committee The student, a social sopho more, but academic freshman, had appealed the court's previous de cision to the Conduct Committee. The Conduct Committee, in view of the counsel’s misunderstanding and consequent inadequate prep aration at the time of the first hearing, requested that the court re-hear the case. The primary question was not! of guilt, but whether suspension' was too severe a sanction for plagiarism in this case. The defen dant had already pleaded guilty to copying from a western civi lization testhook on a paper for English composition. The contention of counsel was that the defendant had al ready ‘‘learned his lesson.” Lesser Sanction Suggested His argument was that sus pension could not do any more to impress the defendant with the seriousness of his offense, nor any more to insure that he would not do it again, than a lesser sanction could. He also felt the best interests of the University by deterring more instances of plagiarism, would be served just as well by a lesser sanction as by ROTC Chooses Centuriannes •Seven University coeds have been selected for membership in Centuriannes, coed honorary for the University’s Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (Army ROTC) cadet brigade. They arc Nancy Adams, Ja nice Lunan, Lolly Tweed, Karen Hoyt, Candcnce Clark, Elizabeth Bishop, and Delia Marshall. The Centuriannes were nomin ated by the cadets of the brigade, and interviewed and selected by Scabbard and Blade, senior mili tary science honorary at the Uni versity. This service and honorary group for the brigade and the University will have a total of 15 members, after seven more girls are selected for member ship during winter term. The coeds will act as sponsors for the several units of the cadet brigade.
