Conscientious Objectors Discuss Draft ny Jim MimiALL Kmrr.tld Muff Writer Can young men who arc not Quakers, Menonites, or other ‘‘peace denominations" obtain a conscientious objector’s draft classification? The answer is definitely yes, ac cording to Steven Deutsch of the Eugene Friends Meeting House. Dcutsch, on assistant profes sor of sociology at the University, made his comments Monday night at a discussion held by the Friends and the Eugene Turn Toward Peace group. “It’s up to the registrant how he will say what his beliefs are” and his draft board will act on that statement, regardless of his church affiliation or lack of, Dcutsch said. Deutsch, a conscientious ob jector, was iisked by a student whether a statement to a draft board that he was against the Viet Nam war, but hot was in general would be enough to re ceive a CO classification. "It's a little blunt. As far as I can see, a draft board couldn't grant a CO classification on that basis within the present law," Deutsch said. Hut he noted that a court case is being tested whether one may object to the draft on the basis that the Viet Nam war ix “unjust.” Other appeals are being tried on the basis of the Nurcmburg decisions that convicted German officers of war crimes despite ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The nation's draft director says he favors drafting women for the U.S. armed forces, but adds there are no current plans to do so. “Whenever we need women, I think we ought to draft them,” said Lt. "There’s been a fantastic in crease in those asking to be clas sified CO from World War II,” Deutsch said. The biggest in crease has been among Catholics and among those with no church affiliation. Deutsch’s group, the Friends, makes counseling for potential CO’s available. He said other de nominations are now making ef forts to guide young men who seek advice on the CO position.
