Board Opposes Budget-Control Change The Student Publications Board has asked University President Arthur S. Flemming not to give .semi-final budget control over University student publications to the ASUO Senate. Flemming plans to give t h e Senate the authority to recom mend to him the final budgets for all student programs under the Student Union and Educa tional Activities (SU-F.dAc) budg et. That includes student publica tions. The resolution passed by the Publications Board says that transfer of such control to the Senate could result in a loss of freedom for student publications at the University. The resolution proposes one of two possibilities: • The budget of the Publica tions Board be kept under the Paintings Donated Two paintings of Collier Ola cier by a member of the Collier family, Jane Collier Anderson of Illinois, have been presented to Collier Hall. Collier Hall is named for George H. Collier, first professor of physics at the University, 1879 1895 Collier Glacier, Oregon's largest glucicr in the Three Sisters re gion, was also named for Profes sor Collier, who made an ascent of the Three Sisters in 1880. Emerald Editor Phil Sernas, who proposed the resolution, said he thought there might be other alternatives besides those two. He added that the main purpose of the resolution was to get some al Japanese Art Subject of Talk Japan and one of its master painters arc the subjects of two separate presentations at the University tonight. Robert Moses, authority on Ja panese art from Freer Gallery of Art. in Washington, D.C., will give a public lecture illustrated with his own slides on the subject, “The Other Side of Tohaku,” at 8 p.m. in 106 Lawrence. Tohaku is considered to be one of the greatest masters of painting in Japanese history. A color film of Japan will be shown at 8 p.m. in 150 Science. The program will be presented by Arthur M. Dewey. Dewey has filmed the Japa nese theatre, the temples and shrines, the festivals, the Japa nese in the occupations and in dustry, and schools. ALTERATIONS tieqifiund's 'Sa^pfeoHeu. Both he and Sernas said that giving the Senate that kind of control could result in finan cial reprisals against the Emer ald for criticizing student govern ment. The resolution was passed un animously. In other action: • The Pub Board approved a motion to take no action on “React,” a publication of the Students for a Democratic So ciety, and a SWINE publication of a variable title. • Approval was given for the m.
