Nothing would have been more fit ting than to have the Ducks score a last second eome-from-behind hemecoming victory in the sta dium final grid contest. And it might have happened in such storybook fashion if Oregon, trailing 14 3, hadn’t lost track of the downs with ten sec onds left and the ball on the Washington State’s two yard line. Ore gon quarterback Mike Barnes threw out of bounds to stop the clock on what he and a lot of others thought was third down. Oregon head coach Len Casan ova put it simply. "We blew it,” he said, with his head in his hands. “I’m not blaming Barnes; I’m taking the blame myself. Or maybe I should take half the hlame and give the officials the other half." "I looked at the scoreboard (which still showed third down) and lost track of the downs,” Cas explained According to Barnes the side line marker also showed third down. "Actually I thought it was third down,” he said. “We lined up real fast and I checked the field marker thinking it would be correct.” It must have changed as the ball was snapped.” Barnes also said he didn’t see the official give fourth down sign. The confusion began after the Ducks had made a first down on the WSU 11 yard line with 44 second left. At this point, Cas said, they were concentrating on getting field goal position, but on the next play Jones plowed up the middle for nine yards to the two. Both Cas and Barnes assumed Jone’s run was a first down and the Ducks decided to use up one play going for the touchdown. “From where I was it looked like Jones had run nearly fifteen yards,” Barnes said. He added that his team had about the same attitude for the OSU game but that his defense was unsure of its maneuvers. "I'm real proud,” he said. “To day we had the defense set.” Clark also had praise for Ore gon's comeback. i “They made a good halftime adjustment and they made some great catches," he said. The Ducks, behind 14-7 at half time, comnletely dominated the second half, outrushing the Cou gars 98-28 and outpassing them 102-2. “It was a good someback,” Cas I grimaced, “but not enough.” But Mike Barnes when ask ed about the comeback, echoed the spirit the Ducks have shown all year despite a series of set backs that could easily injure a teams’ confidence. “This is the kind of team that can do it and that’s the sign of a good team, which I think we are.” I LAST WEEK!
