Martin entered the Kamo und booted a 24-yard field goal. Those three points, plus his PAT on UW’s winning touchdown, combined with a 42-vnrd punting average made Martin indis pensable to the Washingtonians. Weren’t Ready ‘‘We weren’t ready for the game and they were,” muttered a dejected Frosh coach Norm Chap man. Oregon State threatened in the first quarter as the Rooks got to the Duck 22 before Steve Hilbert recovered a fumble on the 28. The Rooks threatened early in the second quarter also, as quarterback O’Conner led the Baby Beavers to the 12 before he fumbled with the recovery go ing to Henry Muller. The Ducks never raised a threat in the first half, although Hilbert intercepted a pass on the Oregon State 24. But the Ducks couldn’t move and had to punt after three plays. The big problems for the Ducks was their inability to gen erate a consistent offense. "We’d get going, and then a penalty would kill us,” noted Chapman. Another problem was the fre quent dropped passes by Ore gon receivers. “Blanchard threw real well, but we couldn’t hold onto the ball. And I don’t think it was that cold, either.” Chapman had praise for Sin clair on defense. Sinclair, who was rated as one of the best high school backs in Oregon in the last 10 years, has been used spar ingly on offense, but Chapman announced a change will be made. "He’ll get more of a shot at offense now.” “Andy Mauer was also a hard runner for us,” added Chapman. Again, in the closing seconds of the game, an Oregon drive was haulted by the Washington back liners when the omnipresent Ped erson picked-off an underthrown Brundage-to-Steve Reina aerial.
