'Strongest Team We Meet' Gridders Face Stanford * R* b J? Don't Let 'Em Psych You Out, Tzar—Win By BEN KAI.B Kmcrald Sports Writer Len Casanova's Oregon Web foots, winless in three 1966 games, move into Portland’s Multnomah Stadium this week end to tangle with the big Stan ford Indians. Coach John Ralston’s Redskins boast a respectable 2 1 campaign and come into the contest as a one-touchdown favorite. According to Coach Casanova, “Stanford will be the strong est team we meet. They are big and powerful and have a good offensive attack." Ralston’s team will be com manded by sophomore Gene Washington from Long Beach, Calif., who at G-2, 182 pounds is a double threat to the Ducks. Ruggers to Get Reception Sunday A reception in honor of the combined Oregon-Oregon State rugby squad that toured Groat Britain earlier this summer will bo held in the Student Union din ing room from 3-5 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Included in the program will he talks by Murray Dawson of Oregon Stale, who coached the team, and SU director Jack Cross, who also accompanied the team on the trip. All the trophies, newsclippings, and pictures the team was pre sented with will be on d i s play. In addition, slides and oth er pictures of the trip will be shown near the end of the pro gram. He is so capable that Coach Ralston moved his first string caller, Dave Lewis, to halfback in order to make room for Washington. Adding to the offensive at tack of the Indians is senior letterman John Read and sopho more Greg Broughton, who are Stanford’s two fullbacks. Another Redskin, Bill Shoe maker, a 6 foot sophomore, last week booted three field goals in the victory over Tulane, includ ing one for 50 yards. Currently Shoemaker is third in the AAWU in scoring with 21 points —15 via the field goal and six extra points. Stanford’s big front line in cludes tackle Monte Mohrman (210), center Tom Sheehan (225), and Mike Hibler (240). And the Indians' defense also shouldn’t go unnoticed. With players like John Guillory and A1 Wilburn on the defense, the Webfoot attack could be slightly delayed. Speaking of Oregon's attack, it can be said that their poten tial is high. Casanova said, “The pass defense still needs work ing on.” He further pointed out that yesterday’s workout showed good signs and that sophomore Mike Barnes will again open the game at quarterback. On the other hand injuries are still hampering the Webfoot eleven. Offensive stalwarts Arlan Elms, Claxton Welch and Steve Reina will be doubtful for the Port land affair. As far as season statistics go, Stanford holds 21-12-1 advantage over Oregon, but in encounters in the northwest, the series is deadlocked 6-6. Birds Win 1st Baltimore’s two Robinsons, Frank and Brooks, hit back-to back home runs in the first in ning Wednesday and the Ori oles went on to win the first game of the 1966 world series, beating the Los Angeles Dodg ers 5-2 at Los Angeles. Moe Drabowsky, shunned by four other clubs before the Orioles grabbed him, tied a 47 year-old record as he came on in the third inning and re corded six consecutive strike outs.
