Ersted Awards Honor Koplin, Stromberg Two members of the Univer sity faculty were honored June 12 at the University’s 89th an nual commencement exercises with the announcement of the Ersted Awards for Distinguished Teaching. The awards, highest given to members of the teaching faculty, went to Harry Thomas Koplin, professor of economics, and to Karl Robert Stromberg, associate professor of mathematics. This is the second year that the two of the $1,000 awards have been given. Prior to 1965. a single Ersted Award had been made annually since 1957. The awards are made available through a trust fund from the late A. J. Ersted of Atherton, Calif., who expressed the wish that the money be used to en courage and reward distinguish ed teaching and that the awards be made to relatively young mem bers of the faculty who have de onstrated exceptional ability to induce students to reason rather than to memorize. In Ersted's words, the awards should “stimulate an interest in inspired teaching in the class room and in conference.” The Ersted Fund, with the awards made from accumulated interest, is administered by the University Development Fund. Koplin came to the University in 1950 from Cornell University, where he had been a teaching fellow and instructor. He is a graduate of Oberlin College and received his doctorate from Cor nell in 1952. From 1959 to 1961, Koplin was director of the University’s Honors College and assistant dean of the College of Liberal Arts. He spent the 196263 academic Africa Problems To Be Discussed The problem areas facing the emerging nations of Africa will be the focus of a special summer seminar at the University. Problems of Modern Africa is the title of the seminar set for today through Aug. 12. The seminar Is designed to meet the needs of African stu dents pursuing graduate degrees in this country as well as fur nish background material to in terested American students. The interdisciplinary study will focus on Africa's physical limitations, economic growth and development, and the role of sci ence and technology in develop ment. There will also be a con sideration of political stability, international relations and organ izations, educational and welfare services, the minority problem, urbanization and migration, and the prospects for African culture, “integrity,” and vitality. A series of field trips to se lected American institutions such as circuit courts, school boards, and various small entrepreneurs will be conducted to acquaint participants with American meth ads in the problem areas. Stromberg is a graduate of the University where he also receiv ed his master's degree, lie receiv ed his doctoral degree in 19511 from the University of Washing ton. Before coming to the University in 1960, he tuught at the Uni i versity of Washington; at Yale University, where ho wus u re search associate under an Office of Naval Research contract; and at the University of Chicago, where he was a research lecturer.
