Stanford Rulinq Relaxes Social Limits STANFORD, Calif. (CPS) — St a nford Unlvcralty students over 21 an* now permitted to drink alcoholic beverages In cam pus residences and rating clubs, according to on announcement from President Wallace Sterling. Acting under authority of the hoard of trustees. Sterling said, "The university believes that the development of self-discipline, individual responsibility, and re spect for law will he enhanced by entrusting to the students a greater responsibility for compli ance with state law and hy the removal of complete prohibitions which are not enforceable in practice.” The ruling has long been ex pected since a committee appoint ed by President Sterling earlier this year recommended that stu dents over 21 be allowed to drink on campus. In all, four liquor pol icy studies have been conducted at Stanford in the past six years. Drinking Set’ In addition, a five-year study of student development at Stan ford concluded that for more than three out of four students "drinking is well established . . . even at the time they enter Stanford . . and is apparently sanctioned by their peers, their parents, and society." "Abstainers do not feel that social pressures require them to drink," the study said, “except possibly in fraternities.” Prior to the new ruling, liq uor was permitted only in mar ried student housing and in the 1 newly-built Faculty Club. The new rule includes these major points: • Each Stanford student is in dividually and personally respon slide for compliance with the ap I plicable provisions of California ! law (It is illegal under state law for any person to sell, fur-, nish, or give any alcoholic bever ages to a person under 21.) • In order to provide maximum opportunity for effective self -' regulation which will protect "the interests of alt members of the Stanford community," each resi- i clnnce hall will adopt regulations governing the use of alcoholic beverages and be responsible for their enforcement. • Alcoholic beverages may not he used by students on the cam pus except within the interior of campus residences and eating clubs. • Alcohol beverages may not be served at social functions in residences occupied predomi nantly by freshmen. • Alcoholic beverages will not be sold on the campus. • Violators of the regulations will be subject to discipline Greek Tragedy Topic of Speech William Bedell Stanford, Re I'iu.s professor of Greek at the University of Dublin, Ireland, will speak on “The Emotional Ef fect of Greek Tragedy” at 8 p.m. today in the Student Union. He has published widley, con tributing numerous articles on theological, historical, literary, and linguistic subjects. He was editor of the classical periodical Hermathena for 20 years. He has edited and compiled commentar ies on “Livy XXIV," the “Frogs” of Aristophanes, the “Ajax” of Sophocles, and Homer’s "Odys sey.” Reservations Due For Dinner-Dance Ticket reservations for the Faculty Women's Club dinner -1 dance Saturday should be made today. California officials view the new Stanford liquor regulations as just another sign that the at titude on hard liquor that for 00 years legally compelled "dry zones” around California schools is breaking down. A state law that passed in 1H70 compelled a mileand-ahaif dry zone around the University of California campus at Berkeley and elsewhere. That limit has been slowly giving way and 10 years ago the legislature amend ed it to permit the sale of alco holic beverages inside the zone in bona fide eating places. Faculty Club, Too Another amendment earlier this year gave the University of California permission to sell beer and wine in the faculty club at Berkeley. During winter quarter the stti j dent legislature persuaded the more conservative Associated Women Students to extend the curfew time for junior and se nior women to (i a.m. It had been 2:30 a m. Freshmen an<J sophomores still have to report to their residences by 2:30 a m. but their 36 late leaves per quarter were increased under the new regulations. President Sterling has said that the new regulations arc part of a three-year experiment and that no more changes will be made during that time.
