Campus Plans Few Activities By STEVE DIMEO Emerald Entertainment Editor It.s being a Friday of reputed infamy ha* apparently put a super natural scare into local activity directors—though not yet, of course, into us non believers (knock on wood). For very little i* scheduled on campus this weekend while only a little more beckon* from the local theatres. The only thing that’ll try to happen on campus is the Bottom of j the Bowl dunce in the SU Saturday night at 1) p.m It’ll take a dime and a nickel to he able to frolic to the recorded music. The SU movies have had it for the term so that’s about it for campus opportunities for action this weekend. If it’s more sedate consolation you'll be looking for, you might turn to the cinematic offerings instead of to any more active planned (or especially unplanned) apartment functions. Today the Fox is trying its luck with a short run of “The Naked J'rey." It’s a technicolor story that takes place one hundred years ago in Africa. A safari of ivory hunters is ambushed. The one sur- ] viving member, Cornel Wilde, is befriended by the natives and is honored with taking the "Chance of the Lion,” a challenging fight for survival against nature and the natives. Wilde produced and directed as well as starred in this film lie’s the only name star in the production. Co playing until Wednesday with it will he an older Elvis Presley ; picture, "Fun in Acapulco " Both films will give wuy next week to "The Heroes of Telemark,” > the WWII story of sabotage previewed at the McDonald last weekend. Billed along with the detective-adventure story "Harper” at the j McDonald is the first Him made on Viet Nam that isn't a docu mentary. "A Yank in Viet Nam" was filmed under actual battle 1 fire. It's hlack-and white. To honor the supernatural and apparently rampant today the McDonald is planning an “Insectothon” for late tonight after the last showing of "Harper" Doors to this special showing of two horror films—one in color—open at 11:30 p in The show starts at midnight Tickets which have already been selling in advance cost $1 50 The overwneiming success oi me oounie arauemy award winning hill at the Eugene Drive-In has prompted the retention of lucky '('at Ballou" and "Ship of Fool*" for another week. Dee Marvin won the academy award for best actor for his dual roles in “Cat Ballou.” Jane Fonda plays "Cat Ballou." Dwayne Hickman and Micael Callan — the show’s weak points- along with Marvin as the drunken has been gunslinger try to save her from hanging. "Ship of Fools,” a Stanley Kramer production, is the dramatiza tion of the book by Katherine Ann Porter recently awarded the Pulitzer Prize not for that novel but for a book of short stories. The tale of a symbolic sea journey stars Oscar Werner, Simone Signoret, Elizabeth Ashley, Lee Marvin and Vivian Leigh. The Mayflower is holding on to "A Patch of Blue” for yet another week. It’ll give way to "The Trouble With Angels” with Kosalind Bussell (ns a nun) and liayley Mills At the IteUig Don Knotts is starring in the black and-white pro duction “The (Jhost and Mr Chicken.” This education bill is com plemented by the full length color cartoon "Pinocchio in Outer Space." And the McKenzie is playing the two Man from UNCLE movies that played recently at the lleilig: “Spy With My Face” and “To Trap a Spy.” Maybe after all you'll have better luck with a four-leaf clover. Sierra Club Hears Candidate Porter Talk By JOHN DENNY Emerald Staff Writer Passage of an Oregon Dtine.s park bill in the present session of Congress is possible this year it Sen. Wayne Morse's require ment regarding condemnation of private property in the dunes area is accepted So said Democratic Congres sional candidates Charles O. Morse is entirely reason able in asking that negotiations be made for purchase of private property in the Dunes area in Lane and Douglas counties be fore the power of federal con demnation is invoked,” Porter stated. "The bill will probably pass; but, if it doesn’t, I will personally introduce another bill,” the Con gressional candidate continued. He said that, if he had to intro duce another bill, the bill would be the same as the present bill, except that it would not include a property condemnation clause. Porter said that he feels property owners in the dunes area should I have the opportunity to negotiate the sale of property before their property receives federal con demnation. N'ow seeking the Democratic nomination for Oregon’s Fourth District Congressional seat, I’orter held the position 1956-tiO.
