Photo by Jim Chaskin DormWinsSoftballTitle Douglass Hall, a freshman dorm, scored in every inning as they won the Intramural softball championship Monday with an 18-5 thumping of the Busads in a contest marred by injury to a spectator. Trailing 2-1 after the first in ning, Douglass added one run in the second and four in the third to take the lead for good. Stan Owings allowed only two hits and held the Busads score less for the last four innings in pitching Douglass to victory. The losing hurler, Hallend, gave up only five hits but was troubled with wildness. Play was delayed for nearly 20 minutes when a spectator, Miss Sandy Luchs, received a gash in the forehead from a broken bat. First aid was administered until an ambulance arrived. For winning the IM softball championship Douglass received 150 points and the Busads gain ed 137 points. Tennis Team Rated Good By PAUL POLSKY Associate Sports Editor Tennis, the varsity-alumni foot ball game, a lot of baseball and a little track were on Monday's agenda at the weekly meeting of Oregon Club at the Eugene Hotel. For the first time this season, tennis coach Verne Ball spoke. He opened: "We haven’t beaten anyone we shouldn't have, and we haven't lost to anyone we shouldn’t have." Ball feels that the Ducks are a good tennis team but lack one super-star to carry them. How ever, he said, "We have respec tability.” In the PAC championships this weekend at Los Angeles, Bull predicted a 6th place finish for the Ducks with SC and UCLA 1-2. “I feel the tennis in the Pacific Northwest is 20-25 years behind the times, because we don't have indoor courts. We are planning new facilities and should be able to change this soon," fin ished Ball. Crabtree Comments Alumni coach Jack Crabtree spoke briefly about his grid team that will meet the varsity Sat urday at Hayward Field. "It is a real honor to coach these guys," Crabtree said. Len Casanova, Duck football coach, took the podium and said, "I hope to have a little respec tability out there, too. Cas seemed very pleased with spring drills so far and felt that some of his linemen have done outstanding jobs so far. Cas noted, “I’m not quite pleased with the experience some of the kids have, but there is nothing that can be done about that: the defense is pretty green, we lost a lot from last year." Cas also said, "The defensive backs looked pretty good on pass defense . . . but. Berry (Bob, former Duck All-American now with the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL) could change all that. Baseball coach Don Kirsch was smiling but a little haggard , after a weekend in Seattle. The Ducks, rained out Friday, split a I double bill Saturday, the second game going 16 innings. “I can’t recall an Oregon team playing a 16 inning game, espe cially in Seattle on a hot, sunny day,” said Kirsch. “Washington was really tough, a lot better team than when they were in Eugene.” Kirsch had praises for Duck Jerry Gjesvold who pitched 1 2/3 | innings in the first game and ; then 11 more innings in relief in the second game. "Jerry was get ting stronger as the second game j went on. The wind was at his back , and helped his fastball and hard slider.” Delplanche Praised In addition, Delplanche was out standing in Kirsch’s eyes with two triples and a single. Finally, Kirsch pointed out that the Ducks have a 17-15 won-lost record with 16 games being won or lost by one or two runs. The record stands seven wins, nine losses in this category. On the other hand the WSU Cougars have a 10-1 league rec ord with eight games being de cided by one or two runs. They have won seven of those, while losing only one. Kill Bowerman spoke last. “The thing about the OSU meet was Lumby being hurt,” said Bowerman. “Without I.umby they lost 10 lino conceivamy to points which could have turned the meet into a much closer event.” Howerman. therefore looks for a much closer meet on Memorial Day when the Ducks und the Heavers meet on Sam Bell Field at Corvallis.
