While the Ducks were losing three times to league leading Washington State last weekend, Washington was in the process of dropping Oregon State three times in succession. Coach Don Kirsch’s Webfoot# defeated the Huskies three times in the first meeting between the two teams, winning 4-2, 8-3, and 13 I! When asked about the upcom ing games, Kirsch shot back, “I hope we win them Washington probably has confidence now, af ter sweeping the series with Ore gon State last weekend. "We expect a tough scries,” he summarised. In reference to last weekend’s triple loss at J'ullman, Kirsch stated: "Washington State broke open the first game with their hitting. We were in the other two, and could have won them both, but our errors killed us.” "We hit well, but couldn't get enough hits with men on base.” Washington State now holds a commanding lead in the confer ence. The Cougars, fourth ranked nationally, have won eight and lost only one in league competi tion Oregon and Washington are tied for second at 4 5, and Ore gon State is in the cellar with a 2 7 record. "Must W in All" "WSU Is in good shape now,” stated Kirsch "They have only one more road series left. That one is against us here I feed we will have to win all our remain nig games to have a chance at the title." After 29 games, junior center fielder Dennis Baldridge contin ues to lead the Duck regulars in batting, hitting opposing pitchers for a 39<J percentage. Baldridge also leads in doubles with seven, and has three triples, six stolen bases, and 20 KBls lie has scored 34 times in 9(i trips to the plate. Junior shortstop Kon Del planche is the number two hitter, belplanche, who bats behind lead olT batter Baldridge, is currently averaging .345, while driving in 24 runs on seven home runs, five doubles, and two triples. Veteran catcher Dale Ehler bas taken over the KBI leader ship with 2d, and is the third ranking hitter at .323. lie has rapped four home runs and three triples. Cress Hitting Hard Ted Amato, sophomore second sacker, is averaging an even .300, and outfielder Steve Bunker, who doubles as an end on Len Casa nova’s football team, has a .293 average. Bunker, incidentally, will not make the trip to Seattle, due to a sudden case of the flu Sophomore Ted Novack will make the trip in his place. The most rapid improvement on the team has come from an other footballer—sophomore first baseman Scott Cress. Several weeks ago Cress reached a low of . 143. Then he found his eye and started hitting. Today he is sport ing a .275 average and leads the team in bases on balls with 20. As a team, the Ducks have raised their batting average to a good .290. as compared to .245 for their opponents. Starting pitchers for this week end's games will be Mike Nicksic (3-1, 3 42), Jerry Gjesvold (2-2, 2.70), and Ken Hadden (3-3 3.96), Nicksic and Gjesvold are sopho mores, while lladden is the only senior on the mound staff. After this weekend, Oregon will face Oregon State three times next week and will close out the season with the second series against Washington State. i • • — .... Frosh Spikers Triumph The frosh track team, paced hy Roscoe Divine’* 1:52 half mile, rolled over an outmanned Clark .Junior College team, 104-38, yes terday afternoon on Hayward Field. The frosh ahut out Clark in aix events in recording their second straight dual meet victory. Divine missed breaking Dyrol Burleson's freshman 880 record by four-tenths of a second in leading an Oregon sweep of that event. Dave Durant and Jim Johnson were the top frosh point getters. Durant took the 120 high hurdles in 14.8 and doubled back to win 1 the 440 intermediates while Johnson doubled in the broad jump with a leap of 23-4, and Ruggers Slate Corvallis Game About 19 rugby players from Oregon and Oregon State Univer sities will join ranks Saturday at Corvallis for an exhibition game against a group of British Co lumbia all-stars. This game is the second in a series of four to determine which of the players will compete in the state of Oregon’s first inter national rugby tour to England and Wales later this summer. The 50 candidates for the trip have been divided into sev eral groups of about 15 men each. Each group will participate in a game, after which team se- 1 lections will be made. The winning time in the 100 was 11.5, due to the fact that an official’s mistake made the race measure out to 115 yards. The frost) 440 relay team, which won handily, was disqualified for an illegal baton pass. The pole vault and javelin were the only other two events in which the Clark athletes were victorious. The winning javelin toss was 101-10, while the pole vault was won in 13-8.
