Other activities, some tradition al and some new, are planned for this week before Mothers’ Week Traditional 'Weekend' Dates Back to 1890 s Junior Weekend originally be gan around the 1830's with ora tions presented by the junior class on the steps of Deady Hall By 1905, each junior class had its own flag, and they were flown from Deady Hall and Skin ner’s Butte on oration day. But the sophomore class attempted to tear down the flags, and all-day battles soOn developed between the two classes. In 1929 the Water Carnival swimming and canoe races—was originated to stop the sophomore junior struggles. The swimming races were in three divisions: women, non-varsity swimmers, and varsity swimmers. By 1939 the Water Carnival became the Millrace Olympics. The highlight of the events was the tug-of-war between the fresh man and sophomore classes: if the sophomores won, the fresh men had to continue wearing their green beanies. If the frosh won, they became sophomores by running the gauntlet (hack pad dle line) and burning their bean DuShane Re-Elected To Regional Post Donald M. DuSnane, dean of student affairs at the University, has been re-elected regional vice president of the Deans of Stu dents of the Northwest Region of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrat ors. DuShane has just returned from Washington, D.C., where he attended a planning session of the executive committee of the NASPA. In fact, the canoe joust and the tug-of-war have become the traditional e\ ents of competition. The next Millrace Olympic events are scheduled for May 3, with paired living units compet ing for the symbolic olive branch. Artist to Speak On Own Work An artist who is always con cerned “with finding new mean ings in the relation of man to objects and to his environment . . will give a lecture Monday at the University. James McGarrell, painter and graphic artist, will discuss his own wwks in a public lecture at 8 p.m. in 106 Lawrence. The artist has followed the masters of graphic arts closely and his etchings reveal his study of Rembrandt. Morandi. and Ma tisse. McGarrell took up printmaking as another means of expressing the ideas and emotions in his paintings and drawings. An other “law” is that no one except seniors will be allowed to sit on the Senior Bench. Wednesday is the day of the Slave Auction, new this year. It will bo held at 4 p.m. at the Free Speech Platform. Two girls from each sorority—an ac tive member and a freshman— will be auctioned olT to the guys who bid the most Coke and Tab bottle caps. The slaves will have their faces covered during the auction to keep their identity unknown. High bidders will be entitled to one hour's work or an evening date from their slave. Thursday is Bermuda Day, making Bermudas the proper campus attire. Friday is Hello Day — the day to say “Hello” to every one you meet on Hello Walk in front of the SU. Traff ic Story Corrected There were errors in the Student Traffic Court appeal case as reported in the Student Court article, page 3 of Friday's Emerald. The $10 line was imposed not for the defendant’s delinquency In paying three $2 parking tickets, but for the display of a staff parking sticker on the defendant’s, a student, car. The three tickets led to the discovery of the sticker misuse, however, as stickers and license numbers are checked as a matter of routine. The defendant did not petition for a hearing in Traffic Court, he petitioned for a waiver of the $10 fine. 11 is petition was denied, and he was summoned to Traffic Court for his sticker violation, which is a violation of the Campus Parking Regulations set up by the University under the authority of the State Hoard of Higher Edu cation. The Physical Plant is the authority delegated to enforce these rules. As such, the $10 line was outside the jurisdiction or Traffic Court, and therefore cannot he considered a sanction under the Student Conduct Code. Since the tine is not a sanction, the sanction of disciplinary pro bation and revocation of driving privileges imposed by Traffic < 'ourt did not constitute double jeopardy. The case could have been tried originally in Student Court under a violation of Section I.B. 2.c. of the Code misuse of University identification cards. It was tried instead in Traffic Court for three reasons: • Under Section II.C. 4 a of the Code, Traffic Court has original jurisdiction over all violations of the Campus Parking Information 1 and Regulations; • The violation is specifically covered in Permits Section 5 of the Campus Parking Information and Regulations; and • Under Section II.C. 4c. (2) of the Code, Traffic Court is allowed to impose sanctions permitted by Section I.B. 3 f. of the I Code. Look Sharp for Spring Fun!
