observed, however, students were reluctant to utilize the struc

Annuity Purchase

have another month to purchase
tax-deferred annuities on their
19<><> salaries, the Office of Busi
ness Affairs of the State Board
of Higher Education announced
Wednesday.
The open period for purchase
of the annuities has been extend
cd to May 31. The deadline for
obtaining a tax deferred annuity
was previously this Friday.
A faculty or staff member, in
purchasing a tax deferred annuity
contract, saves part of his sal
ary, together with the Federal
income tax he would pay on
that amount of salary, for re
tirement income.

When Chuck Foster, a red -
bearded Irishman from Belfast,
came to Eugene in September,
he expected to find a thriving
folk music society here.
He didn't.
So he set out to remedy the
situation. His group will present;
their first program at 8 p.m i

ed Queens University in Belfast,
said the folk music society there
draws about 600 persons to its

Concert Today

in the School of Music auditorium
will feature a young musician
from Stuttgart, Germany, as guest
conductor and piano soloist.
Helmut vom Hoff will conduct
the orchestra during Bela Bar
tok's “Rumanian Folk Dances" j
and Franz Schubert’s "Symphony
No. 3 in D Major" and perform
the piano solo for Mozart's “Con-1
certo for Piano and Orchestra in
I) Major, K. 537" ("Coronation”).
Lawrence Maves, assistant pro
fessor of music, will conduct the
orchestra during the Mozart con
certo, a work rarely performed
on the concert stage.

When he didn't find any such
group at the University, Foster
decided there should be one.
Mostly through personal con
tacts—"I knew there had to be
a lot of people in a city the size
of Eugene who would be inter
ested in a group like this”—
Foster formed the University
Folk Music .Society.
The society is seeking recog
nition from the University, but
Foster expects no trouble on
that score. "It should be almost
automatic,” he observed.
He said the society’s purpose
loes "primarily in entertainment
for the students, but also to bring
folk music to them from other
countries.”

into our organization,” Foster
said. “There must be dozens of
guitars lying around in dormi
tories, and I know there’s a lot
of talent here.”
Foster said another aspect of
the society might include instru
mental workshops (“we might
have one to teach people to play
bluegrass banjo”), but described
it as “essentially impractical.”
“We’re interested also in en
couraging contemporary song—
not that we’re discouraging pure
folk music. But at our hoote
nannys, you’ll probably hear mu
sic by Dylan, Buffy Sainte-Ma
rie . . .”
