Webfoot Grid Practice Going Well By PAUL POI.SKY Associate Sports Editor „ Football, baseball, and a very big track meet coming up with UCLA were the main topics at Oregon Club Monday. Coaches •Len Casanova. Don Kirsch, and Bill Bowerman spoke at the week ly luncheon held at the Eugene Hotel. Spring practice has begun and Cas reports that his squad of 80 varsity hopefuls have been run ring through their paces since late last week. ■'We hope to have a tough team." said Cas. who opened his lb'th season as head coach "After three days of practice we have yet to throw a pass, which is some what of an oddity for us con sidering how much we relied on that in the past.” he continued. Cas reports that his charges are .practicing with a lot of enthusi asm and are doing quite well. Cas also mentioned the two new JC trans Riflers End Year On Winning Note The University rifle team con cluded its regular season in a winning way in a recent meet at Junction City Chuck Ramsdell, in the kneel ing division. Walt Greenwood, in the sharpshooter class, and Terry Carter, in the standing expert class, won individual champion ships for the team. The sharp shooter and marksman squads also took firsts. fers from Boise, Idaho, are look ing quite good. Don Kirsch, the Oregon base ball coach, talked next about his baseball team and its weekend series with OSU. “I was not happy with our per formance in the series and was a little discouraged. However, our two teams are real close to equal strength and it was a tough series." Ducks Lost Anyway Kirsch pointed out that the Ducks outscored the Beavers in runs. 10-9. hit more homeruns. 3-1, and garnered 11 hits to only three for the Beavers in the sec ond game of Saturday's twin-bill. But the Webfoots still lost. Kirsch credited pitcher Mike Nicksic with an "outstanding job," saying that the hurler "fought them hard all the way to win." 'Nicksic wins games with craft, cunning, and deception, and I was tremendously impressed with i his courage.” Big Mike, from j Kent. Wash., gunned down the Beavers. 4-2, in the first game at I Corvallis. Kirsch was also pleased with the hitting of Steve Bunker who began to rap the ball over the weekend, along with Ron Del planche and Dick Armstrong, who hit “well at times.” No Key Hits One of the main problems was the Ducks' inability to get the key hit at the right-time. The problem was compounded in the second game Saturday when steady Joe Kniser had trouble finding the plate and got behind a lot of hitters and had to throw in the good pitches. However, the Ducks have the Bruins outmanned in one Emerald SPORTS Duck Net Team Drops Decisions Oregon's tennis team dropped its second and third straight matches last weekend, losing to Seattle University and University of Washington by identical 6-3 scores. The team's season record now stands at 5-3. The Ducks managed to take only two of six singles matches and" one of three doubles in losing to Seattle Saturday at Seattle. The Duck singles victories were registered by Bob Donnelly, 6-2, 6-10, and Bob Whitman, 7-5, 6-3 Jim Horne teamed with Whitman for Oregon’s sole doubles win. Against Washington Friday at Seattle, the Ducks could fare no better, again picking up two sin gles wins and one doubles It was Chuck DeardorfT and Tom Lehmer who gave Oregon its sin gles points, DeardorfT winning, 2-6, 6-3. 7-5, and Lehmer winning, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. Bo Miller and Dear dorfT fought from behind to take their doubles match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. After eight matches, the tennis ladder stands with Jim Horne ranked first, Miller second, Dear dorfT third, Donnelly fourth, Whitman fifth, and Lehmer sixth. Sophomore DeardorfT has compiled the best record on the team, winning seven straight as a number five player and losing his only match as a three play er. Coach Praises Brame “Steinhauer got a good double at Berkeley in the shot and disc, as did Wade Bell in the half and mile races. Ken Moore also did a good job," commended Bower man. Bowerman spoke a little about the strategy he plans to use against the Bruins He wants to get points so he will not ask his athletes for superhuman efforts but will plan to run them where they can do the most good His philosophy will be to gain some point* in each event and not get shut out completely in any one event if possible.
