Since most of the criticism against our Presi dent's program of bringing prosperity and goodwill to Southeast Asia has come from the colleges, it seems only fair to phase out various forms of federal aid to education. It seems especially prudent in view of the fact that few college stu dents are voters. This "aid cut" woidd also have two side benefits. It is reason able to estimate that of a pool of fJOd.OOO students receiving federal loans, 300,000 would have to leave college, at least temporarily, if the loans were phased out. A conservative es timate would provide that at least 200,000 of these students could he reclassified I-A, and inducted into the armed forces of the United States. This would immediately provide an ade quate pool of military person nel from which to provide aid to our Vietnamese friends. This ready pool of manpower would, of course, eliminate the need for testing and the evaluation of students class standing, which have recently become contro versial. In short, it should be readily apparent that education is not necessarily beneficial to a free society, hut can actually be come harmful. Education lias caused students to think, which has in turn caus ed them to criticize the ob viously correct policies of our President By now it should be readily apparent to all reason able prudent men that the ac tions of our President are sen sible and just, and thus deserve the support of all loyal Ameri cans. (( 1‘iitinuni front t'lior ft) I say these things as an American who is revolted at what we have allowed ourselves to become when we can sit silently before TV sets and watch each day the impersonal, inhuman slaughter by Americans of Vietnamese people who want little more than a better life for themselves and control of their own country. l)o we realize what this is doing to us? U.S. bombers may indeed bomb North Viet Nam “hack to the Stone Age" and the Viet Cong may one day be totally obliterated by massive bombings and hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops. Hut in doing so. as our government and all of us should think about, the Saigon "government’' would not he winning, and the U.S. actions would go down in history (as they may already) as some of the most inhuman butchery of civilian populations in a civil conflict since the Nazis and Italians aided Franco in the brutal, almost mechanical crushing of the valiant, but tragically ill equipped and poorly trained Loyalists in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39. We would also be destroying forever the already faint memory among other peoples of our own revolutionary past and ideals. Yet, all this need not be. Policies are creations of men. They can he changed as they were made, if enough people will it. That should be our task at this moment, before we are totally brutalized by the counter-revolutionary slaughter we are immersed in in Viet Nam. Camus once wrote as a similar point in the Algerian war, “I know that the great tragedies of history often fascinate men with ap proaching horror. Paralyzed, they cannot make up their minds to do anything but wait. So they wait, and one day the Gorgon devours them. Hut I should like to convince you that the spell can be broken, that there is only an illusion of impotence, that strength of heart, intelligence and courage are enough to stop fate and sometimes reverse it One has merely to will this, not blindly, but with a firm and reasoned will." This is our task. Responsibility for the horrors of what is being done in Viet Nam by both sides, but especially the U.S., and for what those actions are doing to the people ol this nation—and for what even more serious events may ensue, which may do violence to our nation and all humanity, rests with us. Even those who already speak out and act against the war; especially those who, though opposed, still remain silent. For, what ever the ultimate results, we shall all be responsible together, and each will have to stand and declare what he has done and what he has said.
