Delplanche's Single Edges L&C By LYNN MUCKBN Sports Writer Justice will always be served. For lOVi innings nothing went right for Ron Delplanche in Thursday’s game with Lewis and Clark at Howe Field. He grounded out twice in the early innings, in addition to committing an error, and twice, in the fifth and eighth stanzas, was robbed of sure extra-base hits by sensational catches. His only base hit was on a fielding miscue by the Pioneer pitcher on a poorly-bunted ball, a play which should have been scored as an error. The Duck star was due when he came up in the last of the eleventh with the bases loaded, and he responded with a clean single to right field that push ed in Jim Moore from third base for the winning run in the 3-2 ball game. Long Rap Delplanche's winning rap. iron ically, traveled about 40 feet in the air. Two of his previous outs were hit to the 270 foot sign in centerfield before they were pull ed down on a pair of running grabs by Lewis and Clark out fielder Ed ChefT. The Webfoots opened the scor ing in the second inning on Rich Armstrong’s single, a stolen base, and an error by the Pioneer sec ond baseman. They increased the margin in the fifth when Denny Baldridge singled to left after two more Lewis and Clark miscues. driv ing in Monroe with the Ducks' second run. The Pioneers finally got to Oregon hurler Mike Nicksic in the eighth panel as singles by Brad Shaw and pitcher Bill Zel enka, combined with three cost ly Duck errors, pushed a pair of unearned runs across the plate. Threat Quelled The Webfoots threatened ngain in the tenth, as a pair of bunt singles by Baldridge, and I)el planche, and an infield out by Steve Bunker put men on second and third with two outs. But Scott Cress’s 370 foot drive was pulled down by the speedy Cheff in center field to kill the rally. Moore opened the bottom of the eleventh with a single to left, ad vanced to second on a walk to pinch hit Dick Ogan. and set the stage for Delplanche's game win Form Charts Predict Win For Trackmen on Saturday By DAVE BARONTI Sports Writer There’s a consensus agreement in Seattle and Eugene alike that something's going to be changed in Washingtonland after this Sat urday. Namely, the University of Washington's undefeated track and-field team. Like Oregon, the Huskies have been in action twice so far this season. But the competition the Huskies have faced has been any thing but spectacular. And that’s principally the rea son Washington turned back Idaho 98-47 last Saturday and won a five-way meet the Satur day before with 89Mi points to 60 for second place Central Wash ington State. But if season bests mean any thing, the invading Ducks, de fending NCAA co-champions, will trounce the Huskies something like 89-44 in Saturday's PAC opener for both schools. Not counting the two mile, which Oregon has not yet run this spring, the Ducks figure to win ten events to six for the Huskies. And that’s giving Washington the benefit of the “toss up” con tests. If Oregon should surprise and win a few of these events— and that is not unlikely—they could turn the meet into a rout, piling up 90 or 100 points. Some of the in doubt contests: • Long Jump — the Ducks, with a best of 22-5, are not strong here—but neither is Washington where Doug Westlake has a best of 23-V4 and Jerry Williams’, 23-1. One point in Oregon’s favor is that Oregon’s jumpers are just getting into condition and are, in Coach Bill Bowerman’s words, of unknown quality.” • Discus—Oregon’s Neil Stein hauer split with Husky A1 Pem berton during their two meetings last year, and the competition IM Schedule Golf Thornton vs. Psychology Tennis 4:00—Douglas vs. Phi Kappa Levis CORDOROY—DENIM CUT-OFFS WHITE—SAND-BLUE—GREEN 875 E. 12th this year is no less close. Stein hauer has a best of 171-234 this spring. Pemberton, 171-4. • +40 Intermediate Hurdles— Williams of Washington has the best mark (54.5) but Oregon sophomore Bob Blum, if he runs, has run a 54 9 and appears to have almost unlimited potential. • Triple Jump—School record holder Werner Sonnenschein is still not in shape—but his jump ing over 49 feet last year was a surprise to everybody including himself. Williams’ mark of 45-10 certainly isn’t that far out. • 440 Relay—Washington has (Continued on page 5) Emerald SPORTS PAC Track Statistics Pole Vault Marc Savage, UCLA 168 Jim Eshelman, Stanford 16-0 Bill Fosdick, USC 15-614 Chuck Smith Stanford 15- % Javelin Dick Selby, UCLA 237-0'4 Egil Sundbye, UCLA 234-0*,* Phil Lowrey, OSU 23O''0*4 Jack Bonkrude, UCLA 224-514 Shot Put Neal Steinhauer, Oregon 63-8 Traugott Gloeckler, UCLA 59-1*4 Alain Drufin, USC 57-11% Lachen Samsam, OSU 57-0 Discus Gary Carlsen, USC 189-8*4 Bob Stoecker, Stanford 184.8 Randy Schneider, Cal. 177-8 Dave Weber, UCLA 173-2 440-Yard Relay Stanford. 40 5 UCLA . 40.8 California . 41.1 USC . 41.3 100 Yard Dash Norm Jackson, UCLA 9.4 Larry Questad, Stanford 9.6 Dwight Middleton, USC 9.6 220-Yard Dash Norm Jackson, UCLA 20.6 Dwight Middleton, USC 21.1 Larry Questad, Stanford 21.1 Forrest Beaty, Calif. 21.2 440-Yard Dash Dwight Mic'dleton, USC 46.2 Forrest Beaty, Cal. 469 Bob Frey, UCLA 47.1 Jim Ward, Stanford 47.3 880-Yard Run Dennis Carr, USC 1:48.5 MISS 3>.Q. The three ! Duck moundsmen limited Lewis and Clark to five safeties. Webfoot mentor Don Kirsch didn’t seem too overjoyed fol lowing the victory "It's Rood to 1 win,’’ he said, “but I wish wed win bv a more comfortable mar gin. That’s the third extra inning game in n row." Kirsrh Happy Kirsch was happy about the performances of Delplanchc and Nicksic however. "1 thought Nick * sic pitched a real fine ball game," I commented Kirsch. "He wasn't real fast, but he got the job j done. “It was good to see Hon Del planche hit the ball good again," said the Duck coach of his short stop. "He hasn’t been hitting the ball on the head lately.” Thursday’s victory brought the Duck record to 8 8 for the year with the University of Portland providing the opposition in sin i glc games both Friday and Sat j urday at Howe Field.
