Newspaper Page TextNew Coffee House Opens for Campus A collet* house dubbed “T h e Womb” opened Friday night as one of the lirst projects by co operating Christian student groups. The basement of West minster House, 1414 Kincaid, was remodeled for the new coffee house. The goal is not to establish a "religious coffee house,” but to provide a meeting place for peo ple with a common interest in world and university problems, backers say "It should be a place to come, whether or not you con sider yourself a Christian, where you can just talk,” said Don Lan ning, president of one of the sponsoring student groups. The coffee house will also be YWCA Offers ~~ Service Projects The Young Womans Christian Organization is offering students a choice of four community serv ice projects which they can sign up for from flam to S pm Wed nesday, tn the YWCA office, (»er linger. The programs the YWCA is Offering this term are these: • Working with handicapped children, either the physically handicapped at the Children's Hospital or the mentally handi capped at the Pearl Ruck School; teaching physical education to mentally retarded junior high students; or teaching swimming to the mentally and physically handicapped. • W orking with pre-delinquent youths through the Big Sister program • Working as a volunteer at Sacred Heart Hospital. • Participating in "Project Progress," a program which con gists of supervising and leading after school activities with grade school children of low income families in drama, art, recrca lion, and music. This program is especially interested in education, recreation, and PE majors All men and women students ate eligible to participate in these programs. "It may be a hu morous recognition that some peo ple think of the church as a shel ter into which churchmen with draw, much as "into a womb.” "We don’t have that in mind at all,” he said It’s not a "religious coffee house and we hope the ideas will range beyond the solely re ligious or Christian.
