JERRY DAVIDSON 10 Years with Emerald ODE Printer Here 10 Years “There used to be just two of us down here at night to put out the Emerald," remembers University Press Night Foreman Jerry Davidson. “We'd do as much as we could and then the day crew would come in and fin ish up the next day and the pa per got out whenever they could finish up.” Jerry Davidson joined Univer sity press as night foreman on April 1, 1956. Today he celebrates his 10th anniversary as “down stairs editor” of the Emerald. He's the man who runs the print ing operation that puts out the newspaper, the man in charge of putting ads together and the news in the paper. It’s a much bigger operation now than when he and that one typesetter put out the paper. He has three or four men work ing tinder him most of the time. His job is more than just do ing the mechanical work. He works closely with editors and the advertising department to help them save money and make the Emerald’s narrowly balanced budget work. Content isn’t his main worry, though he did stop a libelous edi torial once and once reminded an editor that he couldn’t endorse candidates on election day. “If they want to print it,” he told Old Oregon, the University alumni magazine, “We’ll put it in.” Many editors and business man agers have relied heavily on Jerry Davi, dson for advice and gets along well with most of them. "There were only a couple I didn't like,’’ he says. You make your best impres sion when your glasses are ap propriate, becoming and up to date.
