Highest Ever for Webfoot
Wrestler 4th in NCAA

Of the 32 wrestlers in the 130
pound division of the NCAA
wrestling tournament, held dur
ing spring vacation at Ames,
Iowa, one was a tw'o-time na
tional and 1964 Olympic champ
The rest were “something less”
—eastern champions, midwestern
champions. NAIA champions . .
and other wrestlers of the “less
superior” mode.
Oregon junior Curt Scott was
one of those other 31.
And by a chance draw’. Curt
met the Olympic champion—Yo
jiro Uetake of Oklahoma—his first
match.
Uetake won, as expected, 12-4.
And the world's best 130-pounder
went on to take his third straight
liCAA title, pinning Joe Petrole
o£ Brown in the finals.
But in the meantime. Curt “fol
lowed” the Japanese through the
bracket, lopsidedly beat three
opponents — (Allgood of Neb.,
11-2. Rolley of Bloomfield. 18-3.
Milone of Temple. 9 2) and placed
fourth in the tournament, losing
4-1 to Indiana’s Bob Campbell in
the consolation finals.
But that was still a higher fin
ish than any in the history of
University of Oregon wrestling
(which includes a 1956 Olympian,
several national AAU champions,
and scores of Pacific Coast and
conference champions).
Only Disappointment
The last match was Curt's only
disappointment.
Two of Campbell's four points
were for riding time, and had
two rounds been about five sec
onds longer, Scott may have had
four additional points (he was

‘That guy also wrestled too
conservatively for Curt," noted
Art Keith, Duck wrestling coach.
“All those things added up.”
One other factor was that Curt
lacked all the tremendous fire and
drive that characterized his early
matches.
“I usually start out slow and
finish strong in tournaments,"
Scott observed “This time it was
the other way around "
“If I had wrestled Campbell
like I did those other guys, I
would have won "
Best Effort Was t'etake
He agrees that his best effort
was against Uetake.
“That guy,” says Curt, “is tre
mendous. He controls, controls,
controls, so you can't do anything.
His ride is fantastic. I'd spin
once and lose any other guy, but
with him I spun three and four
times and he was still on me."
“He's absolutely the best wrest
I ler I’ve ever met or am ever going
to meet.”
But there is one area where
Curt felt he was superior to
Uetake—strength.
“He really wasn't that strong,"
grinned Curt. "But he knew how
to use his strength. Take his grip
It didn’t hurt you — but you
couldn't get away from it either."
However, Curt, who sets chok
ers in the summer, admits that
he has yet to find any wrestler
able to use strength to an advan
tage over him.

Baseballers Slate
Howe Field Debut
After a spring vacation tour
through the Southwest that left
them with a 1-7 record, Oregon's
baseballers open their home sea
son Wednesday at 1:30 with a
doubleheader against Linfield Col
lege at Howe Field.
Last year the Ducks, led by re
turning senior Ron Delplanche,
compiled a 27-8-1 record enroute
to placing second in the Northern
Division.
OREGON DISTANCE STANDOUT Bruce Mortenson will be on
hand Saturday when the Duck track team opens ID home season
on Hayward Held against Montana Slate and Santa Clara Youth
Village. Mortenson nabbed both the NCAA and Northern Division
steeplecha.se crowns last year and. along with the remainder of
the Oregon team, will be working to defend the NCAA champion
ship which the WrbfooU share with CSC
