Williams Says Mice Students' Own Fault ur.nni SUIT Writer The presence of mice in Uni vcrslty housing is primarily due to students’ own carelessness. A student who keeps food in his room or who does not keep his room clean is leaving an open invitation to mice, according to Daniel A Williams, assistant di rector of housing at the Univer sity. During this term, the Kmerald has received several letters from students asking the administra tion to do something about mice in University housing One University living group, in a letter to the editor, advised the administration to act promptly to exterminate the mice in their housing. They threatened to f!) mail a letter to each of their parents informing them of “the filthy conditions" under which students live; <2) parade to pres ident Flemming’s Office and re finest to be moved to other living quarters; and (3) mail each mouse caught (students were catching mice* in mousi-traps) to a member of the University ail ministration. Williams reports that as soon as the Housing Department is in formed of mice in University housing, action is taken A certain number of mice are found in University housing every year, according to Williams He says that they are found in both old and new housing. Three living groups have com Model Congress Loses Support Young Republican support for the Model Congress was with drawn due lo “lack of proper or ganization" by the VIt executive board in a closed meeting Wed nesday. The Steering Committee has been “ineffectual in organizing" the Model Congress, according to the resolution read by YR Pres ident Don Powell, The hoard recommended next fall, before national elections, as a better date for the Congress from the standpoint of student interest. In other business the board set March 31 for the next club meet ing A debate on the National Student Association and a club stand on the issue will be held. Club elections are planned for April 7, with candidates urged to announce their intention at the March meeting. Students must join the club in March to be eligi ble to vote. World Seminar Leader to Speak Russell Johnson, former direc tor of the International Confer ence and Seminars Program for the American Friends Service Committee, will speak Monday about "Viet Nam in the Wider Contest of Southeast Asia.” Johnson will speak at 8 pm. in Harris Hall, in the Lane Coun ty Courthouse at 7th and Oak Sts. Johnson has traveled through- j out Asia, and has organized four 1 conferences for diplomats, the last of which was in Cambodia. At that time he had a chance to ; talk with Prince Shanouk. Williams believes the mouse "Mart" to Feature Oregon Art Work The Plea Mart, an annual col lection of Oregon artists' works by the University Art Museum, will he held this Saturday at the Eugene Hotel. The Mart, will open at 7 p m with a no-boat cocktail party and auction preview. The Sidewalk Cafe, with displays of wares and music, will open at 8 p m. Booths will be offering bargains on art works from that time through the evening. Oregon artists contribute their works to the Mart each year. Anyone attending the Mart has the opportunity to purchase any of these at the auction Bidding begins at 9 p m. WUS Week Slated At Start of Spring World University Service I I (WUS) Week, a week of fun in the name of charity, will be the first University function of spring j term. Scheduled for the first week ! of the term, the week will feature j a "Red Hot Professor” contest, | ‘‘Ugly Man” contest, Turtle Der- > by, and a "Battle of the Bands” j at the rock ‘n’ roll dance at the j week’s end Every cent earned will be con- j tributed to World University j Service. All money earned by liv-1 ing organizations will go towards their contestants in the Ugly Man event. WUS has lent support to edu cational endeavors throughout the world since 1920, when it was I organized to provide relief for students in Europe and Asia Minor after World War 1.
