Newspaper Page TextComposer Comes To Hear Concert A nationally known composer, George Kochberg. will be in Ku gene to attend the University Symphonic Hand Concert at 8 pm today in the Sheldon High School auditorium Conductor will be Kobert Vagner, professor of music and director of bands. Itochberg is coming to hear the second performance of his new wind band composition, "Apo calyptica," an unusual work which uses 12 percussion play ers and 28 percussion instru ments. Completed "Apocalyptira" has been said to parallel the emotion al content of one of Shakespeare's King bear speeches, which pref . aces the score Kochberg is head of the music department at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Another new major work to be performed is Aaron Copland's "Emblem*," a work written cs peeially for college bands which also extensively utilizes percuf sion instrument*. The Symphonic Hand will also perform Robert Russell Burnett's "Symphonic Songs for Band," two 20th century Rusisan works —Shostakovitch's "Festive Over ture, Op 00" and Knachaturian’s Dances," three movements from the "Serenade No. 10 for Wind Instruments, K. 301” by Mozart, and a brass fanfare from Debus sy’s "Le Martyle de St. Sebas tian," and Orant Fletcher’s "Her ald* for Brass Instruments.” Today's concert is the first for mal appearance of the 85-mem ber University Symphonic Band this season Kach year the band presents a number of new com positions from the United States and Kurope. Mo (AP> — Thr general board of the National Council of Churches went on n-c- j ord Wednesday as favoring the admission of Ked China to the United Nations. The vote was 90 yes, three no, \ and one abstention. The resolution was introduced by University President Arthur j S Flemming. The statement also proposes that a study be made of possible diplomatic recognition of the Chi nese government. The declaration urged the Uni ted States to pursue a policy of support for the seating of Ked China in the United Nations "un der conditions which take into account the welfare and political status of Formosa (the seat of the National Chinese govern ment).” Cooperation on the exchange of information on food production, birth control, and other types of technological development was also urged. The board said its recommen dations on China were made “as Christians, and therefore as wit nesses to a Lord who reconciles Us nil” while recognizing "the increasing beligerence of main land China."
