Newspaper Page TextHoop Team Hosts Bears, Indians Nasty Savages, Anyway! By BILL MORRIS Sports News Editor Coach Steve Belko was optimis tic this week about his team’s chances in the PAC. "We’re not out of the ranning for the top spot yet.” Belko said. "Right now' I would say that on a given night any team in this confer ence can beat any other team." This was exemplified last week end when Washington State slipped by top ranked UCLA, and knocked the Bruins out of the top position in the conference. "It’s not who you beat now,” Belko added. “It’s how many you win. This week should untangle the conference a little, but I sus pect it will go down to the last week.” Oregon faces the two teams they faced last weekend, Stanford and California—only this time the Ducks will have the McArthur Court advantage. Friday at 8 p.m. the Ducks face Stanford, who beat them, 81-64. at Palo Alto last Friday. Oregon stayed with the Indians through the first half, but Oregon main stay Jim Barnett fouled out with seven minutes remaining in the game and Stanford quickly pulled away. “We'll have to have a better effort on Ray Kosanke and Bob Bedell.” Belko said, recalling Stanford’s win. “We’ll have to bottle up Kosanke in the middle of the floor. Board Play Vital “Board play will be a key fac tor against Stanford,” Belko add ed. ‘They are one of the best in the conference on the boards this year.” Kosanke and Bedell got 23 and 24 points respectively for the In dians last weekend, accounting for 17 of the Indians 56 rebounds. Saturday night at 8 p m. the Ducks face what Belko terms as one of the fastest teams on the coast — California. "We've come a long way since Barnett has decided he doesn’t! have to carry the team," Ilelko said.
