Wrestlers Meet Vikings, Oregon State ii.Kiiin ■ u Sports lid I tor Oregon's wrestling squad won’t have much chance to rest after it meets Portland State Friday after noon. Hale Thomas will see to that. Thomas, head mat coach of the Oregon State grappling team, brings his Heavers to McArthur Court Saturday for an B pm. match with the Ducks. And he’ll be bringing a team that owns a 7 .’t record; a team that just fin (shed a road trip to the tough wrestling country of the south west, winning two out of five matches; and a team that is the j ueicnoing I'AC champs. “OSU is strong," said Oregon coach Art Keith this week. "They’ve beaten Central Wash ington real had and Central was a Utile too much for us to han dle ’’ If tin1 comparison of the two meets is valid, then Keith will have a right to worry. The Ducks were beaten by Central Washing ton, 20 « Not Since 1957 Oregon hasn’t defeated the Heavers in the mat sport since 1057, when the Ducks held a 14 l.’l edge. Hut that fact doesn't seem to bother Keith. “I think we'll surprise Oregon State,” Keith said. “We’ll be ready for ’em. We’re not going to lie down for them.” But that match is scheduled for Saturday and, as Keith says, ‘We’ll take ’em one at a time.” The Ducks travel to Portland Fri day for a 3:30 p.m. match with the Vikings, the same squad Ore gon edged last week in McArthur Court, 19 14. “They’re going to change their lineup and he after us,” added Keith. “But if we can get the kind of performance I’m expect ing, we could do well.” Keith, whose squad holds a 5 2 OREGON'S Oranl flcnjyoji, a 123poundrr, strains for advantage during OCE match recently. The wrestling team travels to Portland for the afternoon Vik ing match. The last time the Vikings and the Ducklings met was one week ago in Eugene. And that con test ended in an 18-18 deadlock "Both teams will be trying hard to win this." remarked Oregon roach Art Keith. "I know we can do better I.ast week, we were in really poor condition. Since then we've i>een running a lot. I hope it'll show. "Portland State has long been a wrestling power (the Viks won the NAIA tourney last year) and they're used to having successful freshman teams. So we've got a job to do.” Freshman gymnastics coach John Sampson is preparing his boys for an encounter with South Eugene and David Douglas high schools . . . two schools which are expected to have the field to them selves in the battle for the state high school crown next month. The frosh sipiad, on the other hand, is "extremely thin.” Since the team lost all-around i performer Bob Leech through I academic difficulties, Sampson's ! squad has been reduced to five men. One of those men, Wayne Noecker, can be counted on to give South and Douglas as much as they can handle. Two weeks ago in a tri-dual meet, Noecker won the all-around twice, and compositely placed first in 11 of the 14 events. In addition. Sampson says, "Spence Kissler has been improv ing tremendously on the still rings We might pick up a first there. Dennis Schuideisz. our floor man, is also looking good." Last year the frosh did not meet South but beat Douglas. 48‘i-47l£. “I don't think it can be much closer,” observed Samp son. "But we'll be trying to win.” The meet starts at 9 a m. Sat urday in McArthur Court. Oregon Judo Club Sets Tournament The Oregon Judo Club will pre sent a judo tournament this Sat urday at McArthur Court from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participating schools are Ore gon, OSU, Reed, Portland State, Lane Community College, South western Community College, and Eastern Oregon College. Squad Listed Grant Henjyoji, with a 3-4 rec ord, will wrestle at 123 pounds; Curt Scott, 7-0, at 130; Doug Ro bertson, 4-2-1, at 137; Steffen Cri ner, 4-3, at 145; Craig Caster, 2-5, at 152; John Malpass, 1-4 at 160; Bob Mitchell, 4-2-1, at 167; Bruce Glenn, 4-0, at 177; and Bob Law rence, 5-2, at heavyweight. Glenn, who has won three of his four bouts by fall, sat out a three-match road trip a couple of weeks ago because of a leg injury. But, according to Keith, Glenn's “coming along much bet ter; his injury is pretty well along.” The coach continued, 'Everybody’s healthy.” Keith graduated from Oregon State with his bachelor's degree a year before Thomas arrived as head coach of the Beaver team. Keith wrestled for OSU, earning individual coast championship honors three different years. And so he’ll be meeting the team Saturday for which he has competed. “I think this situation heightens the interest a little,” commented Keith, “and makes the Jesire to win a little higher.” No New Occurrence It’s not a new occurrence for the Oregon coach. Keith coached three high school teams in a period of nine years and saw a lot of his performers compete with others he had tutored pre viously. “I’ve moved around so much,” Keith said, “I’m kind of getting used to wrestling against coaches and kids I’ve worked with be fore.” Portland State will be looking for a win in its match with the Ducks Friday, having lost to Ore gon last weekend. Two of the top grapplers for Howard Westcott's team are Rick Sanders and Ma sarvo Yatabe. Sanders and Ore gon's Henjyoji will likely square off again in a rematch while Ya tabe could wrestle any one of two or three Oregon middle weights. Henjyoji stayed with Sanders through the third round until San ders, leading 8-2, slapped a pin ning combination on the Duck wrestler in the final minute of the match for the fall. Yatabe defeated Robertson in a close match, 2-1.
