Friday evening and Saturday afternoon the Oregon State Bea vers and the Oregon Ducks will continue their long rivalry, this time on the hardcourt, with a pair of basketball games. First, the Ducks, 5-6, will trav el to Corvallis for an 8 p.m. en counter at dill Coliseum, and then Saturday afternoon the Ducks will host OSU in a region ally televised affair at McArthur Court beginning 'at 2:30 p.m. Although these games will not count in the PAC league stand ings, both teams will be after the coveted Chancellor’s Trophy which annually goes to the team that wias the season series. The Ducks will be very eager for the Beavers as they would like to wrest that trophy from OSU. As it stands, the Beavers have won the symbol of supremacy 12 of the 13 times it has been up for grabs since the inauguration in 1953. jiuui airuH^cr Looking at the Beavers, Duck coach Steve Bclko remarks that "they are much stronger than last year, and they have good hoard play.” Once again the Bea vers, 94, under coach Paul Val enti this season, are a well drill ed and very slow, deliberate team. They are very disciplined. Belko reports that the Ducks have been working against a zone defense during practice this week and that he is doing this mainly out of necessity. He does ex pect them to go mainly man to man but they might sneak in with a zone. He also said that he can not remember a Paul Valenti team using a zone defense. Belko has also primed his charges against the press. He was not satisfied with their perform ance against the press used by WSU last weekend and has tried to rectify that situation in prac tice. “Our main problem will be their over all balance,” said Bel ko. "We must take the good shots because if we miss we may not be able to get the hall back for awhile.” And it's pretty hard to score without the ball. Captained by White Looking at the OSU personnel coach Paul Valenti’s team is captained by Charlie White, a 6-4, 189- pound senior from Detroit, Mich. He is a transfer from Mon terey JC in California. White is considered by Belko to be one of the most dangerous players on the Beaver team. White can lead the offense, shoot, and handle the ball about as well as any guard in the league. Last year he was the second highest scorer with 250 points and had 183 rebounds. So far this year White has been instrumental in leading the Bea vers to a 3-1 league record and first place tie with Stanford and UCLA. Against SC White dumped in more than 20 points to pull the Beavers out of a tight situation. His defensive play has been out standing. Loy Petersen, a sophomore transfer from Pepperdine College in Los Angeles, has also been good for the Beavers. The 6-5, 190- pound forward, took a lot of the scoring in the first few games but recently has been somewhat quiet. Coach Belko is hoping to keep him that way over the weekend. Before the season started Pe tersen was rated an outstanding sophomore prospect, one of the best seen at OSU of all time. IM Schedule Basketball 3:50—Court 40, McAllister B vs. Douglas B. His only defi ciency is experience and he has picked up a lot of that so far this season. Belko also had praise for Rich Whelan, a seasoned veteran with an improved shooting eye and good ball handling techniques. "Whelan is a definite shooting threat,” Belko said. Scott Eaton at 6-3 and 192 pounds is another, Beaver to watch. Eaton is a much improved shooter from last year who possess terrific speed and good defensive player. The only other thing, if these ! weren’t enough already, that wor ries Belko is the Beaver’s bench strength. Coach Paul Valenti has named Eaton, White, Fredenburg, Whel-! an and either Petersen or Harry Gunner to start Friday’s game. Closed Practices All this time the Ducks have not been standing still. During the week Belko has held closed practices and worked very hard. Tuesday night the Ducks work ed long and hard, deviating from their usual early week programs. Wednesday the Ducks worked hard but not as long and plan to close our drills with a short workout Thursday afternoon, j Belko usually doesn’t like to work his teams too long and hard be- i cause injuries tend to crop up ‘ easier and the players get tired. One of Belko’s biggest concerns was Bob Craven, the 6-7 forward from South Eugene who has been coming into his own in the last couple of weekends. Craven is suffering from an infection but reports indicate that he will prob ably be ready. The Ducks are also looking for Nick Jones to continue his up ward swing into stride. The jitter bugging Ducks scored 27 points last weekend and showed flashes of his fine sophomore form. His defense on the tough Washing ton and WSU guards was tremen dous. Another good effort from Jones will be a great asset to the whole team. The continued fine play of guard Dave Kafoury has also been a big boost to the Duck attack The 6-0 senior from Cleveland High in Portland has turned in fine performances of late, including some fine clutch' shooting from long range and good defensive work. Then there is Jim Barnett, the noblest Duck of them all. Bar nett turned in some of the fin est plays seen in recent years last weekend at Mac Court with his fine shooting and ball han dling abilities. And all of this with those sore fingers of his still-cushioned hand with foam rubber and tape. Barnett led the Ducks to two weekend wins against WSU and Washington with a total 44 point effort and fine all-around play. With this in mind Paul Valenti of OSU will have his hands full trying to defend the flashy Duck and hold the Oregon scoring ma chine for the weekend.
