WASHINGTON STATE’S Dick Frichict performs on the side horse during Saturday’s WSU-Oregon-Chico State double dual gymnastic meet in McArthur Court. The Ducks topped Chico State, 146.65 100.60, but were edged by the Cougars, 152.50-145-65. John Turchi paced the Webfoot team, scoring 7.75 points in both the long horse and trampoline. Jim Chaskin photo Swimmers Lose Meets By GORDON ROSENBERG Sports Writer Oregon’s swimming team lost dual meets to two of the nation's strongest teams last weekend in Los Angeles. The Ducks were dumped by NCAA champion Southern Cali fornia Friday. 65-30. and fell to tough UCLA. 64-30, Saturday. The losses dropped Oregon’s season record to two wins and three I losses. “USC is as strong as always,” ! stated Oregon head coach Don Van Rossen before the meet. The Trojans proved this fact by rolling to an easy victory be fore their home fans. Taking nearly all of the first places, USC opened up a quick lead and left no doubt of the outcome of the meet. Meanwhile, UCLA put together a balanced attack to overwhelm the game Ducks. Fifteen Bruins figured in the scoring, led by freestylers Jim Keller and Jim Bailey. Keller swam to first place in the 50-yard freestyle (22,9) and anchored the Bruins crack 400 yard freestyle relay team, which took first in a good 3:23.6 Bailey won the 100-yard free style (50.8), finished second to Keller in the 50-yard freestyle, and swam the opening leg for the freestyle relay team. UCLA picked off eight of 1 eleven firsts, without any one swimmer taking more than one. Frosh Find Weekend Wins By DAVE BARONTI Sports Writer The frosh basketball, wrestling and gymnastics teams — all at home last week—had at least one important thing in common: Namely, they all went unde feated, compiling five wins (com posite) against no defeats. “The hoopsters. led by the shoot ing and rebounding of 6-6 center Glen Campbell and 6-5 forward Jim Hannon, contributed two of the victories, trimming Lower Columbia junior college, 78-69. Friday night and then upsetting the Oregon Medical- Dental School. 88-20. 24 hours later. Slightly less auspicious was the performance of the wrestlers against Clark junior college of Vancouver, Washington, Satur day. Three forfeits by the losers proved Clark’s undoing, despite the fact that the visitors won four of the si* matches run off. Two local high schools—Shel don and Cottage Grove—dropped meets to the gymnasts in a tri dual affair that same day—Shel don 55-50, and Cottage Grove 63.5-405 The win over Sheldon came with Wayne Noecker's de feat of Sheldon's Dave Olson in the final event on the program, the all-around. The basketballers were ahead by only two (38-36) at halftime in their game Saturday night. The Ducklings quickly remedied that situation early in the second half by running off a string of baskets and stretching their lead to 10. The Medical- Dental School fought back to a deadlock with six minutes left; but the lead never changed hands . . . Camp bell putting the Ducklings ahead for good at that point with a short jumper. Hannon and Campbell paced the three-pronged Duckling scor ing attack with 24 — five more than teammate Rick Abramson OPENS WEDNESDAY 676 WILLAMETTE Tke MOTION PICTURE WITI\ SOMETIxiftlG TO OFFEND EVERYONE!! Wrestlers Need Conditioning When assistant wrestling coach ■ Don Hoiness was preparing his freshmen for competition last week, he suspected that his group might not be in very good shape But he didn’t expect them to be as far out of condition as they were. “Everyone of them was whipped after the first round,” Hoiness observed. Then he added, “we're going to do some running next week." The biggest problem the frosh had, however, was in countering the grapevine—an important fac tor in each of Clark's individual wins The only two frosh winners— Dick Bellock, who won a 6-4 deci sion in 177, and Nick Shur, who registered a pin in unlimited— each nabbed an early lead, forc ing their opponents to drop the grapevine and go for the pin. Noecker Leads Frosh Without Wayne Noeker, Dick Smith’s gymnastic's team prob ably would currently sport an 0 2 record instead of 2-0. But Wayne was there, and—to his opponents —he made that painfully evident Against Cottage Grove, he took firsts in the floor exercise, side horse, long horse, parallel bars and all-around. That's first in five out of the seven events.
