Students Request Secret Records resolution asking that students be able to place a hold on the rec ord of their membership in cam pus organizations was passed Dec. 3 by the Assembly of the Univer sity of Minnesota Student Asso ciation. This hold would prevent any release of this information by the Office of the Dean of Students without the student's permission. The resolution, which originat ed in an MSA policy statement on academic freedom, was previous ly passed by the MSA Senate. It must be approved by the Dean of Students before becoming ef fective. Reasonable Organizations MSA requested the change in policy on the basis of the idea that "an organization which seems reasonable to some people may seem subversive or disloyal to others. A student’s investigation of ideas must not be inhibited by his concern over the influences society may exert.” MSA Vice-President Howard Kaibel put it this way: “The Uni versity is a place separate from society where the student has the opportunity to experiment with ideas. He should have the right to suppress information about his activities if he later feels they’re not such good ideas.” The dean, in consultation with his staff, now has authority to make decisions on the release of information about students, subject to review by the vice - president for educational rela tionships and development. Against Closing Both the dean and his assis tant have expressed disapproval of the idea of closing student files on request. Asst. Dean Mar tin Snoke said he protested “this notion that we have the right to hide a particular aspect of our activity. This is contrary to the essential philosophy of democ racy.” Dean E. G. Williamson said he wanted time to discuss the ques tion "to find out just how the stu dents propose to improve condi tions. It took us five years to form our present position and we think we have some good rea sons for it. "If a member of the FBI comes to me and wants to know whe ther a student was a member of the DuBois Club, I’ll tell him,” the dean said. “Am I supposed to lie? I’m a public official and I have a public responsibility.” The Assembly also mandated the executive committee to take necessary steps toward the adop tion of the proposal by the dean’s office. Rummel Co-Author J. Francis Rummel, professor of education at the University is the co - author of “A Prac tical Introduction to Measure ment and Evaluation,” pub lished this month in its second edition by Harper & Row, New York. Other co-authors are H. H. Remmers, professor emeritus at Purdue University, and N. L. Gage, professor of education and psychology at Stanford Univer sity. Drama Auditions Begin Monday Auditions for a new play, “Cas sandra Singing" by David Mad den, to be staged at the Univer sity Arena Theatre in early March, will be held at 7 p.in. Mon day, Tuesday and Wednesday, in the Lab Theatre of Villard Hall The public is invited to try out for the play, which calls for four men and two women of college age and above. Persons who can play guitar and or sing are espec ially urged to audition. Anyone interested in such pro duction positions as assistant di rector, stage manager, costumer, properties manager, sound de signer and operator, and music supervisor should attend an audi tion session or contact Mrs. Le nore Zapell, director, at 344-1824. Persons who wish to try out for the play but are unable to attend the scheduled auditions should also contact Mrs. Zapell. SU Board Schedules Beach Boys Concert The Student Union Board re ceived a signed contract for a concert on March 5 by the Beach Boys. The concert will be held in McArthur Court. Ur bano of the Immigration and Nat uralization Service stated that the annual alien address report pro gram usually causes a sharp rise in the number of applications for naturalization. The law requires all aliens in the United States, with few excep tions, to report their addresses each January. Throughout the United States, almost thirty per cent more applications for natural ization are received during t h e months of January, February and March than are received during other months. Urbano attributes this sudden rise to the Alien Ad dress Report Program Aliens not required to make this report are diplomats, those accredited to certain International organizations and those who have entered temporarily as agricultu ral laborers. Forms for making the reports will be available to aliens at all post offices and offices of the Immigration and Naturalization Service during the month of Jan uary. Urbano indicated that ali ens desiring information, concern ing naturalization or similar mat ters should obtain the forms at an office of the Immigration and Naturalization Service where per sonnel trained in these fields will be available to answer inquiries.
