campus are part of two construc
tion projects to make the cam
pus a nicer place to live—but not
during registration week.
The project extending along
13th Ave. between Kincaid and
University streets, and 400 feet
up University St is part of a
$810,000 City of Eugene contract
to convert the underground storm
sewers to take care of surface
water — usually referred to as
rain — according to Dick Detroit,
city engineer in charge of the
work.
Completion date for the sewer
work is Oct. 1. Detroit said the
project couldn’t be started until
just before school began because
the pipes must be laid in pro
gressive order, beginning down
town.
The other project, to Improve
paving, landscaping and lighting
at the east end of campus, is be
ing handled by the East Campus
J’rojcct, which was set up in 19H1
with the Urban Renewal Agency
of Eugene. Work includes widen
mu j.un avi>. ociwcen Kmeraid
and Moss streets, a $42,000 job
that should he finished by Thurs
day, according to Hick Soder
berg, agency director.
Street dividers, trees, lighting
and a recreation area are also in
eluded in the total work, due for
completion Oct. 1.
A park area is being construct
ed at the corner of 15th Ave. and
Agate St., and a recreation area
for students living in Bean dor
mitory is being built on Colum
bia St. between 15th and 16th
avenues.
The federal government is pay
ing for two-thirds of the east
campus work, with the city pay
ing one-third.
A third project is underway at
the University Physical Plant.
Preliminary piping is being in
stalled for a water cooling facility
to air condition campus buildings.
Portland Artist Exhibits Work
Paintings that range from por
traits to landscapes are in the'
collection, ‘'Paintings by Sally:
Merriman,” now on exhibition in ]
the Museum of Art.
The Portland artist, Sally Mer
riman, is primarily a portrait
painter. She has turned to land
scape painting as a relief from
portraiture and has found that
her landscapes have a positive
effect on her approach to por
trait paintings. The freedom of
brushstroke which she allows
herself in landscape paintings and
studies help to keep her from
"freezing” her approach to each
individual portrait into a tightly
regimented style.
Hours at the museum for the
fall season are from 11 a.m. to 5
p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; 1 to
5 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, Sat
urday and Sunday. The museum
is closed Monday.
