Golfers Enter PAC Meet Oregon’s golf team invades southern California this weekend to face the stillest competition of the season. The Ducks are entered in the Pacific Athletic Conference cham pionships at Indian Wells Coun try Club in Palm Springs. Southern California's Trojans are the consensus favorite to cap ture the team title in the tour ney, but the Trojans will be hard pressed by Stanford. Oregon. Cal ifornia and UCLA. The Indians are the only collegiate team to post a victory over Southern Cal this season, as they handed the Trojans a 16-11 setback two weeks ago. California came within a whisker of upsetting the Tro jans. but the Bears dropped their match to USC on the 18th green, Oregon golf coach Elwood Kret singer takes what must be de scribed as one of his best teams to the conference tourney. The Webfoots are led by Bill Ward and John Hedlund, both of whom have averaged around 71 strokes a round in competition this sea son. Kretsinger's six-man team is rounded out by Tom Kabler, Bill DeBellis. Ralph Schafer, and Hu bert Harris. Kretsinger feels his club has a good chance for the team title, if USC and Stanford should fal ter. Oregon has a 11-4-1 record this season, having lost only to Mon tana. Idaho. Seattle, and Port land State, while tying Washing ton in a match at the Eugene Country Club. The Webfoots lat er reversed the decision to Port land State, and beat Washington in a match at Corvallis. The conference tournament, hosted by UCLA, will be staged on a course which ranks as one of the toughest in the nation. Indian Wells is one of the regular stops on the Professional Golf Association tour, and the col legians can expect it to be as tough or tougher for them as the professionals. The championships take place Friday and Saturday with 36 hole of medal play each day The slow four individuals’ cumu lative score on each team for the entire tournament will decide the winning team. Emerald SPORTS UO Enters Net Tourney; UCLA Heavy Favorite Art Ashe is the second seeded tennis player in the United States right now. And his interests this week end will center on retaining his reputation as one of UCUA s all time finest netters, as the Pa cific Athletic Conference tennis championships get under way in Los Angeles Friday. But Ashe is only one member of a Bruin squad which is unde feated in dual-match play, and remains the heavy favorite to de throne lBfi.'t conference champion Southern California. Oregon tennis coach Dick Wil liams takes five members of his team to the tournament, but the Wehfoot mentor candidly admits that USC and UCLA "will com pletely dominate the tourna ment.” Outside Chance Williams noted that Stanford may have an outside chance, hut he concluded that even the In dians’ chances were dependent on the tourney's place drawings for opening rounds. William's squad will be with out the services of Mike Brun dage, who will be with the foot hall team. But the Duck coach will take his four sophomores Brian Laurie, Mike Donnelly, Bill Miller and Jeff Lewis — plus se nior ace Dick Stark. Top Competitors Ashe isn't the only top rated performer Oregon might face in action. Stanford, a team which blanked Oregon in a match last weekend, boasts the second best netter on the coast in the per son of Jim Beate. Washington will be paced by Dave Leaver and Jim Aikins. Southern California will pre sent one of its usual fine teams, although the Trojans are with out the services of Dennis Ral ston this season Ralston, who captured singles honors in the PAC meet last season, graduated.
