Coach Lauds Team Effort In Ducks 81-64 Spike Win Ky I'llII, HUMAN Emerald Sports Writer “I’m always appreciative of a good team effort,” says Hill How erman. He's gotten two Rood ones re cently from his Oregon track team. A week ago they heat Stanford 74 71. Saturday another great team effort beat Washington State, 81 H4, in a meet that could have l>een closer. But the Ducks picked a couple of unexpected points here and there and turned it into a fairly easy victory. Oregon won 10 events to 6 for WSU. There were no sweeps hut the Ducks had a number of 1-2 finishes and their depth showed. Those bonus points are mostly seconds and thirds and don't look like much hut it must be reinom bered that a few points can swing a track meet the other way. A shift of nine points would have made this one a 73-72 victory for Washington State And it could conceivably have been a closer victory for Oregon. But it wasn’t—mainly because of some fine efforts by a num ber of unheralded Oregon run ners. Elliot Second in Hurdles Perhaps the host of those “bon us points" was Paul Elliott's sec ond in the intermediate hurdles Elliott stayed close to the Cou gars Jim Allen all the way. Allen was obviously bothered by a re cent injury, hut Elliott still clipped off an all • time best of 38 8. only a tenth behind Allen Other unexpected points came from Dennis Malony's third in the shot at 48-3'c, Bob Woodell’s third in the broad jump with a 22-14, and Vern Fox’s third in the triple jump at 44-5*4. Fox and Woodell's efforts both pre vented WSU sweeps in those events. Oregon also got some bonus scoring from Marcial Hunter and Elliot in the high hurdles. They got a helping hand from the with drawal of Allen and Bill Bleak ncy, the favorites, but it’s doubt ful that even those two could have beaten Hunter, who turned in a 14.3 clocking. uunter cum nest Elliot's 14 6 wax also a personal best as was second place Bill Gaskins' 14 5. Bowerman called Hunter's run "a very fine hurdle race." It makes Hunter fifth best hurdler in Oregon history. And he's only a sophomore. Although it was a team effort that won the meet, there were a number of outstanding perform ances, notably by Les Tipton, Harry Jerome, Gerry Moro. Archie San Romani, Terry Llew ellyn. Hunter, and the Duck 440 relay team. Tipton had certainly the top effort of the day. Trailing WSU’s Buck Kipe and teammate Ron Gomez after two throws in the javelin, Tipton unleashed a heave of 263-1 Vi that broke meet, field, and school records. “Everything Went Together” Said Tipton of the throw: “Everything just went together You can sort of feel it when you get a good throw. Everything just goes right.” The throw made Tipton an Olympic team contender. Grinned the big, good natured senior about the Games, “like every body, you hope.” Jerome’s performances were only slightly less magnificent than Tipton’s. The senior from Canada proved he’s completely unhampered by his leg operation of a year ago. He clicked off a 9.3, equal to the best in the nation, and a 21.1 220. Both are good early marks, especially on a cold day. Jerome also anchored the 440 relay team that set a new meet record of 41.6. Moro won at 15-3, followed by WSU’b Nils Siverson who hit an even 15 feet. Three other com petitors in the event had done 15 before but all failed Saturday. San Romani tagged the mile field for two laps, stuck right be hind leader John Valient for another, then sprinted past the Cougar to win in 4:04 9. "It was a pretty easy time,” said San Romani. “The weather just isn’t right to try for good times yet.” Llewellyn was an upset victor in the high jump as he defeated teammate Paul Stuber, a 7 foot jumper, with a leap of 0 9. Oregon got one other perform ance that made Bowerman happy That was Ray Van Asten’s 1:52.7 half mile victory. “Van,” said Bowerman, “was a big question mark but he ran a very fine race.” Flu Benches Van Van Asten, who had been out of action for a month with the flu, was also satisfied with his performance. "The flu only slowed me down a little,” he said. “1 thought it was a reasonably good time considering the weath er and track conditions ” Washington State got their best performances from Allen, who was also making a comeback, and weight man Harold Lorent sent. They both won two events. Allen upset Oregon’s Gordon Payne in the 440 and won the intermediate hurdles as expected Lorentzen also upset Jerry Lar sen in the shot and teammate Jerry Hendrickson in the discus. The other Washington State winners were Bill Self in the broad jump, Valient and Chris Westman in the two mile, and Kent Swanson in the triple jump.
