Cambodians To Mark Tenth Anniversary The University's eleven Cambo dian .students will celebrate their country's tenth year of independ ence Saturday The Cambodians plan a pro gram at 3 p.m. in the SU in which they will dance the "ramvong,” a circle dance, to recorded native music. A speech, designed to ac quaint Americans with Cambodia, is also planned, and refreshments will be served. One of these teachers, Kim Sillon, who will he president of the ceremony Saturday, said he and his country men will wear national dress for the ceremony. Cambodian men wear the sar ong, women the “sampot’’ with a j blouse The sampot is a narrow skirt extending to wearer’s an kies. The only Cambodian woman on campus is Miss Oum Thoup Moiysc Thourk, a primary teach er, who will take part in Satur day’s ceremony. 1500 Year History Cambodian history extends to the 5th Century A.D. The country 1 was taken over in the 1850’s by France. The capital city of the nation of 5,700,000 is Phnom Pehn. Those attending the ceremony will find the Cambodian language very similar in pronunciation to French. Other details about the Uni- J versity’s Cambodians: they greet each other with an enthusiastic "chomreap sour” (choom-re-up soor with the r’s rolled and said quickly) at the same time hold ing their hands together in front of them as if in prayer. Cambo-, dian names have their own intri cacies too. The family name is first, the given name, last.
