Renfro, Berry Doubtful Starters Ducks Face Tough Test By BOB HERNDON Assistant Sports Editor How good are the Webfoots— minus Mel Renfro and Bob Ber ry ? With both Berry and Renfro listed as doubtful starters for Saturday's San Jose State game, this is the question Oregon fans are asking. Renfro, sidelined by a bruising tackle on a kickoff return against Washington, is ailing with a cracked rib, and sophomore half back Dennis Keller is slated to step in for Renfro against the Spartans. Berry, the man who has made the Webfoots click this season, suffered a strained ligament in his right knee and may find him self on the sidelines too. Berry will give the knee a test Wednes day. but if the knee still gives him trouble. Jack Sovereign will take over at the quarterback spot. Webfoot Offense Suffers The loss of Berry and Renfro could put a serious crimp in the Lemon and Green offensive ma chine. Berry and Renfro have ac counted for over half the Web foot's total yardage and have a joint points production of 94 points. Besides the loss of Renfro at his offensive left halfback slot, he will be sorely missed at his de fensive safety position. Fair .May see anion There is still a possible chance for Renfro and Berry to see ac tion Saturday, but if they fail to respond to treatment, they will remain on the sidelines. “We would like them to play, but if they are not one hundred per cent, we don’t want them in there,' said Oregon Athletic News Director Hal Childs. Commenting on_ the Webfoots' chances Saturday. Childs said, “We would like them to play, but if we can’t win without them, then we are not a very good foot ball team.” However, Keller and Sovereign are not without their own creden tials. Keller is the Webfoots third leading ground gainer. The 168 pound sophomore has picked up 149 yards in 29 carries for a 5.1 yard average Playing behind Berry and Doug Tickets on Sale Students may pick up reserve seat tickets for the Homecom ing game with OSU at the Ath letic Department’s main box of fice. Kanehe Out Besides the loss of Renfro and Berry, the Webfoots lost the ser-1 vices of senior tackle Milt Kane-: he. The 250 pound tackle from Honolulu suffered a broken ankle in the Ducks' 26-19 loss to Wash ington Stepping in for Kanehe will be Ray Johnson. A defensive stand out last weekend against Wash ington. Johnson has been battling Kanehe for the starting tackle slot all season. Another defensive standout, Mark Richards, is slated for plen ty of action against the Spartans. Those schools already in the association are: University of Oregon, OSU, Uni versity of Portland, and Lewis and Clark. Linflold College, Port land State College, and Heed Col lege also have shown interest in the association.
