Adds <33 Million UO Boosts Local Economy The University provides a $33 million yearly boost to the econ omy of Eugene, J. Orville Lind slrom, University fiscal director, told the Kiwanis club Wednes day. Lindstrom says that is the esti mated amount spend by the Uni versity itself, students, faculty, and visitors who come to Eugene because of the University. Each Student Worth $3,300 Staff and faculty payrolls alone amount to $11 million each year, Lindstrom said. If the $33 million yearly im pact on Eugene’s economy is di vided by the roughly 10,1)00 stu dents, the economic value of each student to Eugene figures out to $3,300, Lindstrom noted. The effect on the economy when enrollment increases by 1000 is equal to that of a new' factory with a staff of 190 year round workers. Construction at the University last year totaled $4.5 million, which is 30 per cent of the city’s total building permit valuation for the year, said Lindstrom. Education Main Business Lindstrom reminded the Ki wanians that the University’s main business is “education” while he was pointing out the economic aspects of having the University located in Eugene. “The University will have to raise tuition and curb enroll ments in order to obtain the same level of education it now offers if tax revenues are cut by a “no” vote on the October 15 election,” Lindstrom said. Sales Tax Said Election Issue SALEM (UPI)—State Repres entative Ross Morgan of Gresham charged today that the campaign to get a sales tax in Oregon is the real issue involved in the October 15th tax referendum election. He voiced the opinion at a luncheon during the Democratic State Central Committee meet ing at Salem. He said “S o m e people want a sales tax so bad they are will ing to sell the state down the river to get one.” Morgan, who was co-chairman of the Legislature’s Ways and Means Committee, urged support of the tax measure. He warned that “A ‘no’ vote will set the whole state back.” HC Discussion William Shanahan will speak on "German Universities In Crisis” at 8 p.m. tonight for the Honors College discussion. Shanahan, professor of history, spent the past summer in Ger many where he participated in an educational evaluation of German schools. Greater Oregon Sponsors Week This week Greater Oregon will sponsor New Student Activity Or ientation Week. An assembly will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight to orient stu-; dents to campus activities. Donald DuShane, dean of stu dents, will speak on the “Value of Student Activities,’’ and Bruce McKeel, ASUO Vice-President, will talk about the freshmen elec tions and the petitioning proced ures for offices. Steve Kohl, chairman, said the purpose of this week’s activities will be “to acquaint new students and freshmen with the extra-cur-: ricular activities available at the University and to impress upon these students the value of these activities in the total educational program of the University.” Several open houses will be held during the week. The Stu dent Union will have an open house from 2-5 Tuesday; the Em erald from 2-5 Wednesday; the ASUO from 2-5 Thursday; and Greater Oregon from 2-5 Friday.
