Committees Cover Variety of Areas By T1IOKA WILLIAMS (Editor's Note: This is the second of u two-part series on the Student Union. Today’s ar ticle describes the purposes and activities of the SU committees.) Forum Committee Lectures, discussions and pan els featuring local students and faculty members are sponsored several times each term by the Forum Committee. The Commit tee members work to schedule programs which make campus is sues vivid Tentative plans this year call for a scries of lunch discussions concerning the pur pose and goals of the University Last Spring town hall discus sions included such topics as the higher education budget, then under consideration by the leg islature, the United States Na tional Student Association and other issues The committee also programs the last lecture series, a program featuring members of the fac ulty who assume that this lecture would be their choice if it were to be their last lecture. Arts Committee The Arts Committee provides exhibits in the second floor art gallery in the SU building. Kach year three student showings, a wagon show, and several travel ing exhibits are presented. During April and May the Pa cific Northwest Art Annual brings work of outstanding artists to the campus Each year a different art medium is featured. Last spring sculpture was featured. A new art lecture program will utilize colored slides and talks by members of the Architecture and Allied Arts faculty. There will also be a participation hour, which will present students with an opportunity to try a hand at various art forms. Dance Committee Fishbowl mixers, Wednesday night Coke ’n Combos, and Hot tom of the Howl dances are sponsored by the Dance Com mittee. Another added attraction this year is Club Erb, night club type entertainment with a com j bo, refreshments and other en tertainment Two all-campus dances, Hello Dance for freshmen and the Lemon-Orange Squeeze following the Oregon State University has kethall game are also planned by the dance committee. SU Fun nights are co-sponsored by the (lames Committee, Dance Committee, and the Directorate. Students can play ping pong, dance or bowl for three hours for only $1 per couple. Talent Committee Friday at Four, an all-campus variety show is sponsored by the Talent Committee. The Junior Weekend talent show and several hootenanny's will also be sched uled by the committee Plans are also under way for a Folk Song Festival if enough students show interest. Personnel Committee The Personnel Committee staffs the other committees of Di rectorate. The committee keeps a file of available student person nel. Carnes Committee The Games Committee is res ponsible for such indoor games as bridge, chess, bowling, billiards and table tennis. It will sponsor the Erb Memorial Union Chess Open this year. People-to People Committee Working closely in orienting foreign students to American col lefe life is the main project of the PeopIe-to-People Committee. It is affiliated with the national organization and sponsors the University buddy program for foreign students each year. Recorded (.'lassies and Jazz Appreciation This group keeps the two lis tening rooms open and staffs the rooms with volunteer help. Re corded concerts are occasionally Debate Group Sets Meeting Tonight The Oregon debate society will hold its first meeting at 7:30 to night in Room 305 of Villard Hall. The group, headed by W. Scott Nobles, associate professor of speech, deals in debate, extempo raneous speaking, oratory, im promptu, after dinner speaking, and oral interpretation of litera ture. Speakers from the group are selected for the Oregon speech tournament and for tournaments throughout the nation This year, speakers from Oregon will attend tournaments in New' York City, Cincinnati, and Colorado Springs. The Jazz Committee is con sidering an Intercollegiate Jazz Festival. Publicity The Publicity Committee is also a service committee for the other directorate organs. It works with newspapers, radio, televi sion, and prepares posters and fliers. Special Attractions Committee This group works directly with the Student Union Board and sponsors major campus concerts. This year they will bring “Peter, Paul and Mary,” the “Brothers Four,” and other entertainers, to the campus. Academic Retreat Committee This group works directly with the SU Board and sponsors sev eral academic retreats each year. Students and faculty members spend a weekend in a mountain retreat discussing topics of in tellectual interest. YM-YWCA Slates first Coffee Hour Foreign and American students are invited to attend the first in ternational coffee hour sponsor ed by the YM and YWCA at 4 pm. Thursday in the mens’ lounge of Gerlinger hall. The coffee hours, which will be held regularly, are one of the new programs sponsored by the Y this year. Weekly student-faculty semin ars will be held at lunch meet ings. The newly-formed “man and the arts” committee will work on developing a student-faculty play reading committee. Classical as well as contemoorary drama will be considered at the evening group meetings in faculty homes.
