Number 15 and 16 Baseball Nine Posts Victories Over Pilots PORTLAND—Oregon's baseball nine posted wins number 15 and 16 Saturday by blanking the University of Portland, 4-0. in the opener and edging past the Pilots, 4-3, in nightcap action. The Ducks return to league action today and Tuesday, as they host the Idaho Vandals for a single game each day. beginning at 3 p m. The Frosh lost the openers of both doubleheaders and then used strong pitching to win the nightcaps Against Linfield the Frosh com mitted six errors as they lost the opener 9-4. Hoyt DeMers stopped the baby Wildcats with three hits as the Ducklings bounced back for a 3-2 win in the second game. MICKEY DOWERS struck out 10 and gave up five hits as he led the Frosh to a 4-1 victory in the second game with Medford. The Black Tornados won the first game, edging the Frosh 3-2. (AP) — Thanks to weather which ranged from bad to worse, Dyrol Burle son’s birthday celebration was somewhat of a flop. The former Oregon miler who turned 23 years old Saturday had hoped to run a fast mile at the Drake Relays. BURLESON USED a 56 6 sec ond last lap to carry him from behind to a 4:05.4 win. “I knew as soon as I saw the track that I wasn’t going to run a great mile,” Burleson said. Rain poured down on the track turning the infield into a swamp. Burleson was covered with mud kicked up by pacesetter Pat Mc Neal of Kansas State. Duck Duffers Beat PSC 18-9 PORTLAND — Oregon’s golf team defeated Portland State 18-9 Saturday at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club. Lynn Yturri, a junior from Ontario. Llewellyn, Moro Set Pace In 87-57 Track-Field Win PULLMAN, WASH. — Even with four of their top performers competing at other meets, and injured, the Oregon Ducks easily defeated the Washington Slat" Cougars 8757 in a dual track meet here Saturday. Half miler Ray Van Asten and high-jumper Paul Stuber were at the Mt. San Antonio College re lays while Oregon’s top two jav elin men, John Burns and Lcs Tipton, were sidelined with in juries. With these four gone, Terry Llewellyn became the afternoon’s star as the 5-8 Webfoot high jumped 6-10^. This broke the Rogers field record which was set bv Oregon’s Les Steers in 1941. GERRY MORO bettered the school record as he soared 15-4 in the pole vault. Moro had to settle for second place, however, as the Cougars’ Nels Siverson also cleared the same height, but had fewer misses. Marty Frank, the old record holder, was third as he cleared 14-53a. Dave Blunt of Oregon and Jim Allen of WSU were the double winners of the meet. BLUNT WON' the 100 in 9 8, and then came through with a. victory in the 220 in the time of 21.5 which qualified him for the NCAA meet in June. Allen stunned Oregon’s Mel Renfro as he took both hurdle events. In the highs, Renfro crashed the third barrier and never could regain stride as Allen won in 14 5 Allen also took the intermediate hurdles in the time of 38.1. Renfro came through with a good effort to win the broad jump. He was leading with a jump over 23 feet when Eilif Fredrick son of the Cougars hit 24 14 Renfro responded to the chal lenge and sailed 24-8:4 to win and record his best mark of the season. THE WEBFOOTS’ Dave Steen won the shot with a heave of 59-3 and in the process set meet and field records. Steen's toss was six feet further than runner-up Dick Brown's. Other Oregon winners were: Gary Reddaway with a 215-6 throw' in the javelin, filling in nicely for the injured Burns and Tipton. Archie San Romani won the mile with a time of 4:17.4. Vic Reeve in the two mile with a time of 9:30.3. Reeve also was second in the mile, as he re turned to action for the first time since the USC meet. Dick Brown in the discus with a heave of 154-',2 The Oregon 440 relay team composed of Dave Crowe, Jim Meinert, Kenfro, and Blunt was clocked in 41 8. also setting new meet and field records. THE MILE relay team of Keith Forman, A1 O'Leary, Meinert, and San Romani, which was tim ed in 3:19 5. The Cougars got an outstand ing performance from Fredrick son in the triple jump as he sailed 49-4^4 to belter his own meet record which he set last year Vern Fox of the Webfoots came through with a 45-10 effort which was good for second place Lew Powell and Barry Adams of the Webfoots finished second and third respectively to Cougar Jan Bentzon in the HHO. Bent/on was clocked in 1:54.5. John Chaplin won the 440 in 400, with Oregon’s Meinert sec ond in 40 2 and O'Leary third in 405 AT THE Mt. San Antonio re lay-. Kay Van Asten turned in his best 880 time of the year, only to place second to Jim Dupree Van Asten’s time was 149.0 as Dupree won in 1:49.4.
