Who Won Game?-Nobody Knows By BOB HERNDON Assistant Spurts Editor Who won it'.’ Nobody knows. Baseball fans who viewed the Northern Division opener be tween Oregon and Washington State Wednesday may have wit nessed a baseball first, a game where no one won, as yet. THE GAME, late to get under way, turned into one of the wild est contests in Webfoot diamond history. Pitchers on both clubs were hit by their own catchers attempting to throw down to sec ond and a multitude of other in cidents occurred. Cougar Bob Stephens took one on the shoulder from WSU catch1 er John Olerud in the third, but managed to get out of the inning after one Webfoot tally. Robbie Snow, Duck hurler, was hit on the chin by Webfoot back stop Ken Jensen. THE CONTEST also featured a pinch runner for a pinch runner, and four close plays at the plate. Ti.e crowning touch was added in the eighth inning when the um pires called the game with the score tied 6-6 because of dark ness. The conflict arose over the tie score. Under the Northern Divi sio . rules, no rules are pro vided for a tie game called be cause of darkness. Normal procedure would revert the game to the last complete in ning played which would have given Oregon the game 6 4. HOWEVER, the Northern i .1 sion does not provide any govern ing power to rule in such cases, and no one could seem to come up with a solution satisfactory to bo‘h sides. The umpires tried, the coaches tried, and the athletic directors of both schools were consulted. but they all drew a big blank. With a tight Northern Division race in the making, the game is a big one for both clubs. The Cou gars contend that the game should be finished before today's second game of the twin slate. ON THE OTHER hand. Don Kirsch, Webfoot coach, feels the game should be decided by the last complete inning. The final decision will not be known until later today when the athletic directors try to come to some kind of agreement. What ever the outcome, it will certain ly be a game to remember. "This game set baseball back a long ways,” commented coach Kirsch. The Webfoots fashioned the first score of the game in the third on a single by John Living ston and two Cougar errors. THE COl'GARS evened the count in their half of the fourth on a pair of singles and a double. Ron Langhans lead off with a single and scored on a two bag ger by Olerud. The Ducks cut off the Cougar rally with a pair of fine throws from the outfield nipping two WSU players at the plate. In the fifth, the Ducks took the lead again behind the hitting of Don Banderas. Bob Porter, and Cal Dean. Banderas got on with a bunt single and moved to third on an error and a stolen base. PORTER HUSTLED him home with a -single. and Cal Dean topped off the inning with a blast over right-center fence. Not to be denied a win, the Cougars knotted the score in the seventh, quickly taking advan tage of five Webfnot errors in the inning an da single by WSU hurl er Bob Stephens. The Ducks grabbed the lead in their half of the seventh on a pair of walks and a triple by JeiT A1 len. To set the stage for the clas sic conflict, the Cougars evened the score on three singles anu a wild pitch by relief pitcher Loyd Gallahor in the eighth.
