Though none of us can give ab solute guarantee as to the even tual results of joining NSA, we feel that the opportunities of fered our University to become part of the world around us, to train leaders for our student government and the state and nation, and to develop an aware ness and a sense of caring about real issues is sufficient to war rant this experiment Some have protested the structure of NSA; others its cost None of these ar guments stands up against the potential offered by this organ ization. Abolish HL'AC Emerald Editor: Fred Van Natta’s defense of HUAC was articulate, but unfor tunately missed the point His first error is in classifying ■propaganda" with "espionage” and "sabotage.” Communist propaganda does not, especially in a stable democracy like the United States, constitute any serious danger Mr. Van Nat ta’s training as a political scien tist should remind him of the rather complete and extensive socialization processes (family, school, voluntary organizations) of American society which make deviance as extreme as rejecting that system fairly unlikely. When it does occur, it is fair ly harmless because the socall ed deviant? arO so completely committed ideologically that they are completely immobiliz ed when it comes to the practi cal matters of executing their program. Espionage and sabotage are not matters open to political debate. They are determined by strict definitions and discov erable by highly trained people, such as those of the FBI. Need less to say, HUAC has not con tributed to the discovery of one act of sabotage or espion age. Far from protecting Ameri can tradition, HUAC has aided in destruction, its repeated vio lation of important judicial pro cedures characteristic of Anglo Saxon jurisprudence is an ex ample. For example, the last Oregon Demo cratic Platform convention vot ed on the floor, overruling cau tious party leaders, to abolish HUAC. These people were the representatives of Democrats from all over this state. And, the last Oregon Young Republican convention also voted to abol ish HUAC. Considering these important factors, students should vote to abolish HUAC. Tom Mongar, Graduate Student, Political Science. * * » Don’t Abolish HUAC 1 understand the petitions for the referendum to abolish the HUAC (House Committee of Un-American Activities) have been obtained and over 700 stu dents have signed them. It would be most interesting to know how many of these students actually know anything about the HUAC or could give any good reason for having signed their names. The HUAC committee is an arm of the network of security offices in our government. They investigate, and report to our attorney general's office, per sons and/or organizations which seek to overthrow our form of government. Why do these stu dents sign such a petition if they are well informed, and, who are their informers * Freedom does not mean that every one is free to do as they please, when they please, and where they please I for one re fuse to believe that over seven hundred students have knowing ly signed a petition which is disloyal and subversive, in na ture. to our country. They have never had. on this campus, an authority to speak or debate.
