Troians Here Saturday By BOB HERNDON Assistant Sports Editor Although the stands are empty no\. ami the track is bare, the stage is set for the biggest cinder clash of the year. The athletes are primed and ready, the fans are frantically scrambling for the:; tickets, and tomorrow two of the nation's best track teams will clash while thousands look on. When the University of South ern California and the University of Oregon clash, rivalry is hot and the competition fierce, but Saturday’s meet holds deep sig nificance for both teams. USC’S TROJANS, a perennial track power, will enter Hayward Field with their eyes set on re venge. The Trojans will be out to turn the tables on the Ducks who upset them last year, snap ping a USC dual meet win streak dating back to 1945. Besides the pleasure of aveng ing last year’s loss to the Web foots. the Trojans will garner the satisfaction of ending Bill Bower man’s Hayward Fieid dual meet win string of 36 straight over a 15-year span. The Trojans have compiled a fantastic record in dual meet ac tion with 230 victories against only 63 losses. In NCAA action. USC teams have captured the championship 21 times, and an equal number of conference championships have fallen to the Trojans. With statistics like that, the Trojans are justified in their drive for revenge, and as things stack up now, the Trojans have cause to feel somewhat optimis tic about tomorrow's meet. INJURIES AND graduation cut a wide swath in the Duck's points from last year. Missing will be Oregon greats. Dyrol Burleson, Jerry Tarr, and Harry Jerome, all first place winners last year. Adding to the Duck's list of woes is a rash of injuries, poor weather, and a lack of competi tion. Both Mike Lehner, two miler, and John Burns, in the javelin, will definitely be on the side lines. Lehner is on the shelf after a bout with mononucleosis, and Burns will sit out the meet with a pulled chest muscle. The group represents Region 11—Oregon, California, Washington, Idaho and Hawaii. The Oregon junior qualified for AMF’s all-expense paid trip by placing second in all-events action in February’s regional tournament at Berkeley. There, he racked up 1778 pins in nine games for a 199 average. A MEMBER of the varsity for the past two years, Bradbury now maintains a 206 average. He 1 serves as anchorman on the Ore gon squad which is ranked No. 1 in the country nearly every year. Bradbury also finished as the Eugene all events champion in the recently concluded city tourney. 6th & Jefferson the USC spikers have been put ting it to good use, competing in seven meets compared to only two for the Ducks. The Trojans opened on February 23 while the Webfoots were still fighting old man winter. While the Ducks have lost pow er, the Trojans have added valu able points and look practically invincible on paper The Web foots picked up 49 points of their 75 total from the running events, but only 16 of those points are returning. Meanwhile, USC has bolstered their running attack and even have a couple of spikers who could challenge Oregon’s vaunted distance crew. ALTHOUGH THE Trojans look like an easy winner on paper, critics on both sides agree that the meet could be decided in the Green A Yellow RABBITS! at CAMPUS SHELL field events. In the javelin, the Webfoots will have three men in I contention with tosses over 200 I feet, but none can match USC's Larry Stuart. Dave Steen gives Oregon the edge in the shot, but he is still hampered by a sore elbow.
