Domestic Peace Corps Is Still Undeveloped By DAVE HANDS Emerald Assistant News Editor President Kennedy’s proposed "domestic peace corps” is "hard ly ofl the drawing board” accord ing to a University student who observed a weekend conference in Washington, DC. held to dis cuss the plan. Doug Collins, ASUO president Neil Goldschmidt’s publicity ad ministrative assistant, flew to the nation's capitol for the meet, which was sponsored by the U S. National Student Association Collins said the USNSA confer ence was addressed by a member of the president's "task force” which is investigating the idea of a national counterpart to the Peace Corps. COLLINS described the pres ent state of the project as “a lot mpre diffuse than the Peace Corps” and said that the plan— which may he known as the Na tional Service Corps—would work in "social service areas" accord ing to information given him at the conference. He said the N'SA conference was told that the main concerns of the domestic corps would be in urban slums, rural poverty, In dian problems, and mental illness. The conference spilt into groups to consider the plan. His dealt with college preparation and participation, Collins said. Among recommendations made to the task force hy the NS A con fercnce was that the corps have a maximum strength of 5,000 in its first five years of work. The con ference generally indicated a fav orable student reaction to the plan, Collins said. ASL'O President Neil Gold chmidt said Thursday that Col lins was sent to the conference as his personal choice, because he (Collins) ‘could do a good job.” HE SAID HE FEET that the National Service Corps would not overlap the work of students deal ing with migrant laborers in Ore gon, a project he proposed early in Fall term. One objection to the domestic corps has been that it would duplicate the work of existing welfare agencies. • • • Investigations (Continued jmm page 1) discrimination to the attention of the fraternity members it will be all for the good.” In a statement to the Emerald University President Arthur S. F lemming said he “concurs with the chancellor’s report to the state board.” DAN O’CONNELL, president of Inter-Fraternity Presidents' Coun cil, said "if Chancellor Lieuallen and President Flemming are sat isfied that discrimination does not exist this should be enough for the legislature. It would seem un necessary for the legislature to take the trouble to make addition al inquiries.” Lent said he designated in the resolution for the bureau of labor : ministers all civil rights laws. A BUREAU of Labor spokes- j man told the Emerald that the ■ fraternity discrimination investi- i ; gation “would be an entirely new ! field.” For this reason "the pro cedure might be different than that which we usually follow. Gen erally we work along the lines of persuasion and conciliation.” A hearing for the Lent bill has not yet been set.
